Question about Majano

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place to post but I just had a quick questions regarding Majano.

I will be changing my 90g cabinet so will have to remove everything from the tank and transfer over to the new stand.

Well I have a crazy amount 200+ majano and I thought they were just normal polyps so I kept them and fed them....

Now I can see all the harm they do to the rest of the coral and would like to remove them. I tried the injection method which worked on some but not all.

Most of them are in areas where its hard to reach so wanted another method/fish that would take care of it.

I was planning on using a metal wire brush to scrub them off or if I could :blown:

What do you think? Is this a good idea to scrub them off? Mind you that the rocks will be out of the water at the time of scrubbing.

Any help, tips, or advice is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Vai

What is there to ask. You are screw. If there is a large amount of these pests, you can dry the rock out and start over. Soak the rock in fresh water for a few days and start over, or throw the rock away.

If only a few of these pests, or if I can manage to get them to a few on the rock, I keep the rock in an isolate small aquarium (so I can see it all the way aroung) and use a blow torch on any that I see poking out. This way I save all the other live on the live rock.

I suggest scrub the hell out of them and use the blow torch on what ever still there.

I saw a post on RC about a man boiling his LR and it almost killed his entire family.

There was some type of polyp that let off a toxin in the air...will the blow torch do something similar if my LR has some nasty stuff on it?

I have not read the thread, but think that it certainly an exaggeration. There is no reasonable person who thinks a way to sterilize a LR is boiling it, unless he worries about the bacterial in it, which is highly unreasonable. Dry it out or soak it in fresh water is more than enough. I question the sanity of a person resort to boiling LR, thus question any explanation/conclusion that he may come up with his mishaps.

Blow torch to Aptasia or Majano is another mater. They tend to retracted to a place that is not accessible by other mean. Quick blowtorch to the area will heat the local area high enough to kill it without harming the rest of the rock. This is not as radical as you initially think of it. As with anything else, using these tools required familiarity and knowledge about the tool. Butane certainly can blow up a house, start a fire, explosion..... You get my drift.

Common sense or lack of it is always the solution or a problem.

Thanks Orion, I can certainly user a blow torch which will make things soo much easier.

As for a person who boils rock...ughhh I did that about a month ago to arould 40lb of rock that was crawling with bubble caulerpa. I was told that was the only way to remove it for good...

Now I know that a blow torch will work and so much easier!

Bubble Caulerpa can be picking off with tweezers, and then diligent in getting any that was left. When there are not much Caulerpa on the rocks, a hungry Tang will finish it off. Like I said earlier, dry, or fresh water soak would be drastic measure for the problem with Caulerpa. These will take car of the problem and no need to resort to boiling the rock.

Even if it did release some toxin you can always torch outside which will help air out. Torching is much faster than boiling for sure.
