question about ocellaris

I have had one ocellaris for about 2 months. It was doing great. I recently bought another one. They went thru the little shaking and quivering thing which is normal, however three days into it now the established one is acting strange. He is just hovering in the same place and seems to be breathing rapidly. Is this something i should be worried about. He is still eating as usual. Can anyone help.

The hovering swimming along with the labored breathing are a sign of stress and sickness. Look up Brookenyla (not sure if spelling is correct) on RC.

Good point God of thunder....

sls0768 how large was the original clown and what size is the clown you just added? Your sig says that you have only six weeks experience? That is not long enough for a tank to be completely stable by far. If there was not enough of a bacterial population to handle the new fish addition, then it would cause major problems. We need to know more about your equipment, especially filtration and if you use live rock or not. It could be a multitude of problems. If the tank is only a month and a half old, and you have had the clown about two months, the cycling of the tank could have weakened its immune system enough to kill it. IMO, you shouldn't have fish in that tank at all right now but let it mature.

well the six weeks experience is from about 6 weeks ago. My tank is fully cycled and water parameters are as follow
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 10

I have plenty of live rock. The first clown is bigger than the second but not by much. I noticed last nite that the original one also has some stringy feces but today i haven't seen any. He still doesn't want to eat. His physical appearance is perfect.....bright color, not apparent injuries or ich or brook.

also if both are female they will fight probably to the death. They are not fighting at all. Seem to be just fine together.

Stringy feces would indicate an internal parasitic infection especially if they appear white. IME female clowns will not truly become aggresive until they are 2 inches or longer. What size are your clowns?

Try soaking food in Garlic Guard and Selcon to boost their immune system, it has worked for me with my clowns and Discus. If she refuses to eat, you can also try some live brine shrimp to coax her into eating. Your LFS should have some that they will bag and sell you for usually around a dollar.

the original is about 2 inches the other a little smaller. The LFS said to use garlic guard for appetite enhancer. I have been feeding frozen brine and he usually comes right up to the dropper when i stick it in tank. He/she has also eaten right from my hand.

Is she eating now? I would take a stab at saying she is definitely a she at that size and was housed alone for a month. They can change sexes in as little as a month.

not sure if she is eating today or not. I am at work. She was not as of this morning.
I was away last week and when i came home my tank was a little dirty. I did about a 10 - 15% water change. Nitrates were always 0 but have gone up a bit. Do you think i should do another partial water change.

Defenet sign of stress or sickness, this happend to me allot when i gor started not that long ago. A cleaner wrasse or a cleaner shrimp might help.....

i just did a complete test this morning.
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 10
temp 78
he has just a couple of teenie tiny white spots just behind the head area.
But he did have the some string but thicker feces last nite. looked kinda like clear but with some dark patches. Seems like it is hanging on too.

Are they still in the main tank or quarantine? Your main tank will need to be fishless for two months to rid it of ich. Do not buy any more fish. If it were me, I would move them into quarantine (10 gallon tank is fine). The feces sounds like they have an infestation of Capillaria Worm Larvae, or a tape worm maybe which may be what is causing the outbreak of ich (stress triggers it). Ich in marine fish is called Cryptocaryon Irritans. I would treat with a product called Paracide-D and copper.

thanks i was just sitting here looking at the cheapest way to set up a quarantine tank. I have the two clowns a basslet and a small pigmy angel. Do i need to quarantine my starfish and snails too.
