Question about powerheads...

I currently run one MJ900 and one MJ1200 on my 29 gallon. Once i installed the 1200...i have been having temp. problems??? I have my heater turned all they way down...and every few days i will have to unplug my heater due to water temps of about 83 or 94 degrees...which is obviously no good! My question is is it the new powerhead 1200 that causes this heat spike?? Or could it be my heater malfunctioning? I lost a fish once due to my water going up to 86 and i dont want this happening again. It is a huge pain having to constantly unplug and replug in my heater?! Any suggestions.....my house temp is always around 70 or so degrees. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

What kind / how much lighting do you have? Closed or open canopy? Without knowing that, I say blame the heater. They are ALWAYS going bad, there are a thousands threads on RC that say "My heater cooked my tank!"
However, metal halides in a closed canopy can / will do the same thing.
I suggest an Aquacontroller. I wouldn't have a tank without one. It controls heating, cooling, pH, lights, everything. It turns power on and off to your heaters as needed, not depending on the heater's thermostat, which is REALLY unreliable.

powerheads do increase water temp.
if you have a lid on your tank, take it off, heat raises and this will allow the heat to raise up and out of the tank, it will also increase evaporation and help cool the tank.
and if you haven't already done it, you can use the diffuser on on the powerhead to point the flow up and cause turbulence at the water's surface, this will also encourage evaporation and cooling.
if that doesn't get you where you want to be you can try putting a fan blowing across the surface of the water.

i run a 24 inch (i believeit fits my 30 gallon) coralife lunar aqualight...it has Double Linear Strip 65 watt 10,000K and 65 watt True Actinic 03 Blue straight pin base compact fluorescent lamps......i didnt have this problem with my temp. for the past 9 months.......so i dont think its the lighting

i have no lid on the tank......and will the fan idea keep the water at a constant temp......even deeper in the water and not just the surface??

I have the same size tank and the same light fixture. It sounds to me like you MAY have something caught in the intake of the PH. This could cause the PH to work harder than it has to, thereby increasing the temperature.

Like I said I have the exact same setup (my light is 30 inches though) and I have no problem with water temp. Make sure the PH is clean.

no, it will not keep it at a constant temp, it will help it cool.
yes, it will affect the temp of the whole tank. that water doesn't stay still, if your water turns 20x per hour, then the water at the top of the tank makes it to the bottom of the tank around 20x an hour, depending on how you direct your flow.

Reeftanker...what is the PH? Im still fairly unexperienced......need more details....what is the PH and how do i find it and clean it?!

o o ...nevermind...im an idiot! lol :) the POWERHEAD......okay! now i get it....yea i have checked the propellers and they are fine.....i will recheck though....anything in particular to look for that would show signs of any problems?

Well I think it would be pretty obvious if something was stuck in the intake. If you have a pipe cleaner or something that size you can try to clean it out a bit, but if it's a new PH that shouldn't be an issue unless something large got sucked in.

It might very well be a lemon, you could exchange it for another one and see if it happens again.
