question about reefresh2o

Hi all. Yesterday i decided a good clean of the sump was in order after noticing high levels of general crud in the bottom of it. I also got rid of the sump dsb as its never really looked like its ever worked and i now have an in tank dsb anyway which has the obvious signs of working. I have always kept my Reefresh block in the first chamber of the sump were the inlet just drops highly airated water on to it and then travels through my sump. While browsing the web this morning i found some instructions on reef fresh placment and it says the following about the blocks.

9” x 9” x 4” blocks.

The blocks are the most efficient way of facilitating de-nitrification. Simply place in an area of your sump where the block is subject to a gentle to low water flow. Make sure to keep it out of the flow of heavily aerated water and avoid any position where water would be forced to flow through the block too quickly. A slow, consistent flow of nitrate laden water through these blocks allows sufficient time to create the ideal anaerobic environment necessary for de-nitrification to take place and for waste products (nitrogen gas and carbon dioxide) to be efficiently carried away.

Depending on the size of your aquarium, the quantity, and size of your fishes, and the amount of food you feed, multiple blocks can be used to control the nitrate level of your water. Some customers in the States have seen as much as a 2 gram reduction in nitrate-nitrogen levels per block per day when used in this “passive” format.

I have now put my block in the old dsb compartment in the sump with some small peices of LR, do you think this will help get the most out of the reefresh2o? It also shares this compartment with cheato. Also would you use the 100 micron filter sock or not? Any sump advice would be great thanks

Sorry for the hijack but I would like to know if anyone can comment on these Reefresh refugium blocks as well.

They are arriving in our country and have big claims attached to them ie that they will bring Nitrate down to undetectable levels.

As I am in the process of planning a 180 gal reef tank, I am unsure of whether to go with one of these blocks in one compartment in the sump and macro in the other or/ go with macro in one compartment and a dsb in the other.

Cheers and very interested in the response,
Jamie.

Thanks for the reply, have your Nitrates been reduced significantly, if so, by how much?

Thanks again,
Jamie.

PS: The lack of replies on this topic is interesting. This is since I was told this stuff was used by many reefers in the U.S and they were all having great success with it.

I understand that not all reefers use this site but I thought a thread on Reefreshh20 would get more interest if it was as popular as I was told.

I didn't get hardly any hits when I did a search on it on here either.

Food for thought and thanks again for the reply,
Jamie.
