Hello Snow, trust me, this is not a problem. If it is, it's one that hundreds of reefers would enjoy having whom have polyps which won't grow at all. Many variables will cause polyp elongation. Strong current and type, lighting along with a perfectly dialed in system parameter-wise will cause it. I have seen it dozens of time personally. Polyps will also sometimes elongate if they are shaded or not receiving enough light. In my opinion, this is usually the least of all the possible culprits. For example.....many years ago on another site, a reefer complained that is short stubby polyps he purchased 2 weeks prior, were now a 1/2" longer, full bodied, 100% expansion and swaying beautifully in the rotating current. He complained that they were supposed to stay short and stubby. Then I sent him a picture of the exact same polyps I had in my tank. They were always longer from the day I purchased them. Some polyps are charactorictically long but won't manifest this until they are in optimal conditions. Some will even elongate to feed in current. Tank conditions, maturity, parameters, bioload, lighting, wattage, k values, yadda yadda yadda will all dictate and determine slow growth, no growth, appearance, elongation as well as mortality. In short, there are multiple reasons for polyp elongation.

thanks for all the input! when i bought them they were all short but it could be due to the flow! i have a 29g biocube and was running a 250w mh up untill a week ago now im running a 150w mh. they are growing like crazy bt i dont keep the water perfect but at the same time i dont let it get nasty either!
Tagging on to this thread. I've been seeing the same thing!....some of the Zoa's in my tank grown close to the rock and others have an incredibly long stalk. I've been wondering what's wrong with the Zoa's with the longish stalks. But all are multiplying and looking healthy. So....I'm just going to take Mucho Reef's advise...If it aint broke, don't fix it.
Interesting read and good advice. The other day I noticed one of our zoa colonies has really long stalks (only because all of the polyps were actually closed at the same time for once). Decided not to worry about it since it's grown appreciably. Must be somewhat happy!
