Question for Snorvich

Hi Snorvich, after reading your post about brook and your treatment recommendation i decided to dose Flagyl as i can not get my hands on anything else in canada, everything is banned specially formalin.

i have a Blue hippo that seems to have brook

he is in a 40g long QT

my action plan is to change 80% of water, (salinity is same as DT) use carbon tonight (overnight) and dose tomorrow morning if the copper test shows 0

as for dosing
they are in a 40 long
34mg/l
40 gallon = 150 liter
150x34 = 5100mg
so thats 10 pills? does that make sense? i only have 20 pills

day 1 - dose 10 pills
how should i proceed after the initial dose?

As I indicated in the sticky, Flagyl (metronidazole) is by far the most effective drug available against these diseases. Indeed it is the only effective treatment for fish that are internally infected with Uronema marinum, but it has to be administered in the diet. To treat with Flagyl (metronidazole), add 34mg/l (34mg/kg bodyweight is required if treating the internal disease) of the drug to the aquarium water to be treated. A single dose should be effective, but it can be repeated daily, if required, as the drug is well tolerated by most fish. It is a very reef safe drug having little impact on invertebrates BUT it will kill off all protozoans and anaerobic bacteria in the treated tank, so, like all medications that are used in a reef tank, it will have some undesired effects on the ecological stability of the tank.

1st treatment done, i will redo a full dose tomorrow at the same time

you can see on the live feed, so far they actually look happy in this stuff!

how do i know if 2 doses or even one is enough? also how long do they need to be medicated before i do a wc? (i will be testing the water every 12hours)

I looked at your feed and the fish look very active. Hopefully they continue to do well with treatment!

You might want to think about putting a couple more pieces of PVC in there for them so they have more hiding places, especially for nighttime.

question, should i be seeing a difference in 24 hours? how long should it take for the skin to heal?

i have never done the formalin dip, but if anyone has, do you notice a difference immediately after each dip?

I think you can safely do a 2nd dose after 48 hrs without a w/c in between. I'm a bit rusty though as I haven't had to qt anything in quite a while. My tanks are full.

I think if you check out national fish pharm.com there is a good bit of information on many drugs including metronidazole.

I hope this works.. Someone must be able to tell me if you are suppose to see a visual difference after only 24h, if not how to you know if one dose was enough

So far after 18 hours, no visual difference, fish is still scratching his body.

I hope snorvich is feeling better then my fish today

i did the second dose after 24hours as noted by snorvich, so far i do not see a difference, however everyone is active

one thing to not, i did notice the blond tang had a line of bubble white dots right beside his nose, it looks like a line of his skin pores opened up a little, reaction to the meds maybe?

i have no idea how to proceed at this point or to analyze the situation

You may not have brook. They should look better. Describe the appearance of the fish and behavior please.

Hi Snorvich,

Hippo seems to have a few little patched on his head that look like it will potentially peel off, small white dots everywhere (stringy if you look closely), he swims and eats (a little)

the naso started showing small little dots on his face and side spine (looks like hlle) only started after metro dosing, i guess it will get better as i start doing WC

i have yet to do a WC in the past 3 days

Reclusive? Hang near water circulation or bubbler? Respiration rate?

It is very difficult to distinguish brook from Uronema. Treatment is similar, however.
