So this is my first SPS. It was a 3/4 inch frag with no branches at all when i got it. I get kinda funny about my SPS because It show how far my tank has come<from a 10 gallon with pc lighting> Any way I have seen some okay growth but it has been acting weird over the last few weeks. Under the big branch on the left the fluorescent color<when i shine a blue led on it> is starting to fade. Under normal lighting its seems greenish yellow. I have noticed this on the underside of most of the larger branches as well. As it is encrusting at the base and on the tops and sides of the branches the fluorescent color is very bright. All the polyps seen to extended well.. Any way is this color trend normal? I have Some green and orange caps that you can almost watch grow.

Thanks everyone for all of your input.

thats sounds normal most of you sps wont color the same on the shaded side of the branch due to lack of light at least that is my experience... but I dont know for sure your exact complaint but looks good in the pic

when you see the inside of the stalk, with no polyp like what I see with mine. Thats when you should worry :), not when it grows like that.

Completely normal.

The side is shaded as Sean said, and no longer facing the light. If you were to grow the corals for a long time... as the colony grows the bottom pieces would eventually die and/or fall off, and become part of the substrate/reef wall... hence the way reefs are built. :)

In your case... that side will just remain dull w/ little to no polyp extension and won't effect the coral's health. If you were to frag off a portion, and the dull piece were to face the light... it would eventually color up and grow like the rest of the colony.
