Question for those who have separate refugiums

I'm in the process of setting up my fuge and have a few questions. Mine refuge is a 40 gallon breeder that is drilled on one end and will be plumbed into my sump. Here is a picture for reference.

Now for the questions:

1. Do you have any baffles in the refuge? If so why?

2. How do you have your supply line connected to the refuge? How do you control bubbles?

3. Do I need to build an overflow into this tank or can I just use this standpipe with teeth cut into it?

1. NO
2.Supply line? I have my return in my sump tees off supplying my fuge. I dont have issues with bubbles, but if i did it wouldnt be a big deal in a fuge.
3.Stand pipe looks great! I'd stick with that.

1) No

2) I have dual drains on my 180... one Ts and part of that T feeds my refuigum.... I have bubbles in there, but don't really care... I piled rocks around it, and it's not an isse.

3) Your fine with the stand pipe... I just did a couple of bulkheads and connected it up.

Just curious. why did you drill your bulkhead so far down the side? If you came straight thru with the bulkhead higher up, all youd need was a strainer in the bulkhead.

I do not have baffles.
I didn't like the salt creep from the bubbles , so I use a filter sock at the end of the 2inch dia. feed pipe which goes over edge of fuge .Sock clips right onto elbow just over top of water surface.
Stand pipe looks ok....just too small. How much flow will you have?(now and in the future)Your fuge looks pretty good sized.
Be sure to plan and be able to control how much flow thru you will have...to fast or too slow is not efficient.

Because it is drilled so low, the water level can be easily adjusted by the heighth of the standpipe.

Yes, mine is drilled at the top too but...maybe he just wants an additional skimmer instead of a fuge, and there ismt enough room in the sump. Here is an additional sump for whatever (skimmer, probes etc.) that may benifit from an adjustable overflow. Hell...I don't know! : )

I drilled it low because I had planned on installing an overflow. But I was about to make my stockman standpipe today and came up the the other idea. It would save me some time and work to do it this way.

wetfish, what size standpipe should I use? This is 1" . I made it 1" because my drain line attached to the bulkhead is 1". Plus I didn't think I would need a ton of flow through the refuge. How much flow would you recommend through a refuge this size?

I run 5 times my refugium volume per/hr through Mine.30 gal x 5 =150 gal/hr It has worked pretty good the Chaeto grows like mad.

According to the drain calcultor 1 inch pipe will support 600 gal/hr
That is 15 times your tank size/hr that should do the trick.

I like overkill on anything that might become clogged and overflow.I would use at least 2 inch pipe and a bigger strainer at the top of your stand pipe. You're going to have algae and stuff floating around in there any algae strand will gather at the strainer.

I made an overflow and used a Stockman standpipe.

It wasn't that much additional work and I think it works better. I should get good surface skimming.

Thanks.

Wow, thats an awsome job, won't clog and is quiet huh. I like the power center in the back too. And the paper towel dispenser.... well thats just "Brillant" :)
