Question for users - salinity

Hi

in firmware 4.02 we will add another option which allows you to adjust the salinity and density readings.
Because we will meet most customers wishes and needs I want to ask for your opinion.

The problem is that the conversion conductivity to salinity or density is not always 100% correct, this depends on the mixture of salts in the users tank.
First we calculate the salinity based on the conductivity, then we transform salinity to density.

Question:
Should the salinity be adjusted (e.g. +/-0.5; and as a result the density is adjusted, too) or should only the density be adjusted (e.g. +/- 0.010 max.)?

when you say change the salinity, do you mean setting an adjustment which always adds (or subtracts) X to what ever the reading from the probe is? what is the use case for that?

as far as salinity/density, i imagine that most aquarists are accustomed to thinking in terms of specific gravity, like 1.025. (i know i am) if i adjusted the salinity, i would have no idea how that would affect my density reading, which is the number that i'm looking at.

I would have to agree with afex. I too, like most aquarists think in terms of of specific gravity when adjusting the salinity.

yep same here I would prefer to have a gravity reading :c)

specific gravity is just a ratio of the density of saltwater compared to distilled water, so you can basically use the terms interchangeably.

Suggestions....

Maybe you could have your conversion and calculation based on a external chart or updateable chart for the conversion and maybe with time we could cover most off the big manufacture of salt. I wouldn't mind to do some of these and provide them you. All I need is a "Kopenhagen water" for control for my refrac and my probe, and after that I could test a few brands of salt, and send the differencial to you.

For instance you could have a pop-up that would let choose the salt brand and the calculation would be based on your brand.

PS. It is probably an overwhelming task, but it would really be great to have, hey one person can dream :)

afex,
thank you for clearing this (specific gravity = density, more or less)

kidney,
I appreciate your offer, but I think this is too complex for such a simple task

It seems that we should add an offset for density.

Are you going to add the convertion display to the gravity base reading? (like 50mS would be 1.025 for exemple)

THAT would be excellent to see boboxx!! I think all aquarists would like to see tthe salinity displayed this way!
