Question: Magnificent Foxface Poo

Hi, apologies if i've posted in the wrong section as i thought this would be the most suitable place to post this question.

I've had my magnificent foxface for around 2months and eats like a pig. Diet is mainly dried seaweed(those sushi nori) along with some mysis shrimp which are fed around thrice a week. Recently, i've included new life spectrum pellets in the diet.

My question is regarding its poo. For quite sometime, i've noticed seaweed bits floating around in the water column but didn't think too much of it. Only in the recent few days, i discovered that the source of all this was actually from my foxface. The fish was pooing dark coloured seaweed bits. Is this normal? I don't recall reading about this anywhere. Is there something i should be concerned about?

I've checked the packaging on the seaweed but there's no indication of any chemical preservatives or seasoning. Just says seaweed as the ingredient.

The fish doesn't appear to be thinning though, as compared with photographs i've taken of it at an earlier stage.

The fish is kept in a 4x2x2, with no ammonia or nitrites. Nitrates are slightly high at between 30-40ppm but i'm not going for a reef setup so i think its still ok. Testkits used are Salifert Testkits. From what i was told by the LFS, this fish i got is collected from the Maldives. Due to school work and exams, i've not changed the water for the last 2months.

Forgot to mention the fish poos the seaweed soon after eating(within 2hrs). Is this normal or cause for concern? This my first time keeping foxface.

Thanks. Didn't know about this, thought there was some problem like the seaweed i used was inappropriate causing the fish to be unable to digest it and poo it back whole(or in this case, bits).

My tangs do this too and I have also been told that it is simply undigested nori. If it bothers you, you could feed less, if it doesn't I wouldn't worry about it. The only other possible cause that I have found is internal parasites, but normally that is accompanied by other symptoms as well like weight loss or color fading.

Thanks for the replies. Doesn't really bother me, I was just a little concerned over the fish pooing the food whole as i initially didn't know about this.

I'll still keep an eye on colour fading or loss of weight though, just in case.

Have you seen cow or horse manure? Pretty much the same, hard to digest = higher required intake = well, you know the story
