question on 9020

The back presuure won't hurt anything, sounds like everything is OK. As far as how much back pressure, since you are kind of customizing it I would just try it out and see, you could test it by filling your container with water.

Good idea I didn't think of that I am still tring to break in the skimmer.I have noticed that when I feed coral food in the tank the skimmer calms down and it stops foaming. This means I don't have to turn the skimmer off when feeding.I will also see what happens during water changes. My other skimmers went nuts and overflowed if the skimmer wasn't adjusted. Is this normal that foam production gets interupted during feedins.I used to shut my skimmers off when I fed.

No need to shut them off but yes, the oils in the food and on your hands will stop skimming. FWIW, freeze dried krill will boost skimming because of the cellulose/chitin content and it tennds to mop up oils.

So far the skimmate its a very light green. One side seem to produce more.Based on your experience is the tunze better to wetskim or dryskim.I am looking more for whats better for the tank but also for skimmer performance.Since you have used this skimmer for years I am sure you have a bteer knowledge of it.To me its seem odd that a skimmer of this size can do a 500 gal tank. Its so dam small I am having a hard time beliving it can do a very large tank.Roger whats the maximum size tank you would put it on this includes awith a sump and a heavy bioload.I am curius to see plus this would give me a better idea if I want to upgrade tank size.

The catalog recommends the rated volume for softies, -20% for LPS, -40% for sps and -60% for a fully loaded SPS tank with lots of fish. I think those are accurate recommendations. You may want to open up the venturi on the other side a bit more. Wet skimming removes more phosphates, green skimmate indicates a fair amount of algae present.

yes the skimmer is in my sump along with the calerpa I had no choice in the matter.I did adjust the valve to equal the foam production on both sides.I placed some egg crate inbetween my sump to keep the calerpa way from the skimmer intake. If I do get a larger tank I am planning on using 2 sumps linked together with a remote DSB aswell. This way the skimmer will be alone or in the dsb side of the sump but away from sand.My plan will be to have 2x 80 gal sumps possibly larger.Since the sumps will be in the garage behind the tank it won't be an eyesore.I don't know if the tank I will get will be 220 gal 265 gal or 400 gal.The 400 will put me over the top as far as what thisskimmer can do.I will still have the two sumps of that size no matter wich tank I will get.

Did you make sure your return pipe is in properly.Did you make sure that plastic half moon piece is in properly or else you won't get the correct amount of water going in.

Check that and also that the inlet for the air into the venturi nozzle is properly inserted.

does it mean I should take the whole thing apart to check?
it is skimming, but the skimmate on one side can never reach the top. And I think everything is attached correctly, otherwise I will have no skimmate at all right? And the half moon thing is in and tight. I check that before

I have the same problem; mine causing by the bottom pieces (I mentioned on another post - wise choice). Everytime I touch the sump/skimmer, I would check those pieces to ensure that they were in the right positon. BUT.. you can still feel the water flowing/leaking from the bottom of the skimmer, and they are different; so the foam level is different !!!

Does it make sens to you ?

I'm stll thinking how to block the water coming out from the bottom. But so far, I got a lot of foam.

If the bottom piece is not staying in right that usually indicates the pump is not in completely. If it is not flush it will bulge down the bottom piece and prevent it from inserting in the groove in the back. Also be sure the piece is put in the right way as the front has a raised rib and the back is flat to insert into the groove.

ddboy, I know it may be a hassle but I would take it apart to double check everything is correct. It could be a half dozen things off by just a bit making it not work right.

I will try to take it apart later, as far as the bottom plate goes, it is insert in all the way. And I was thinking what univalreef
was thinking. if I just kind of move the skimmer a little bit, sometimes it works better. and i am sure my bottom plate is in all the way. Is this a common problem? roger. And do you think it will work better if I take the suction cups off the bottom?

Yes, it can be difficult to set it in without moving the bottom plate. The suction cups are not meant to be stuck down, this tends to aggrevate the problem. They are just for it to stand on, they stabilize it and minimize vibration. I have found that it si best to set it in place while holding the plates in.

roger, I don't think the bottom plate is the problem. I took the whole thing apart and reassemble it back, and the plate is tight, but yet 1 side barely hits the top and the other side just never does. I really don't know what to do anymore. is it okay to take off the suction cups? I really hate that. it makes it harder to set the unit down.

You can take off the suction cups. Is one side getting the brunt of an overflow or is the air inlet obstructed in someway? If I recall you are using ozone- is it T'd to feed both sides or just one- ozone has a dramatic effect on skimming, it can increase it in very low doses and certain circumstance or lower it in higher doses. You want to use a very small air pump to add the ozone- no more than 100 ml/hr. I prefer 50ml/hr.

thanks roger, I am now only feeding one side with ozone and I am following your instruction. I am only feeding about 10mg of it. you think it will be okay? and should I adjust my air pump to the lowest output? now both side can reach the top now. but my air screw is almost coming off and it is still barely getting bubbles to the top. so all the dirt got trap at the top and it is very dirty at the top now.

That means one side is getting ozone, ozone oxidizes waste so there is much less to skim, I think that is why one side is not skimming so well. For all practical purposes a 9020 is 2 9015's running side by side.
