I just received an order today of some beautiful Creamsicle Zoas. I did a freshwater dip and when I placed them in my tank they began to let out some sort of fume, kinda looked like smoke. Has this happened to anyone?? Is this normal??
I haven't seen 'smoke', but I have seen plenty of critters crawling out for their lives from a fresh water dip. Give 'em a couple of days, I bet they will be fine.
Actually it looks like it is trying to reproduce..... corals do that some times when they get stressed out...... one colony lets out the sperm and the another lets out the eggs..... thats how coral farmers get crazy color combos out of the zoos..... just becareful I think that it can cause a spike in ammonia so just keep an eye on it. And yes zoos also are hermaphodites and can spwan by growing more polyps on their colony. Corals can actually spawn in 3 way I just 4got what the third way was.
thejiro, thanks so much, that was very helpful. I though that zoas reproduce just by splitting off a larger polyp, I never knew they let out sperm and eggs, thats very interesting. Thanks
no not yet, thats the scary part. I had my hands in there today...from the guys dog drinking the water from som frags, the dog died...Thats really scary.
I hear you Mike, I did'nt feel anything funny in my hands, but you know how it is when you read about something like that. Now my hand feels funny, probably nothing but Im hoping to give everyone a heads up and hopefully watch your kids more around your aquarium.
Thats pretty amazing. I have a zillions of Zoas in my tank and NEVER thought about toxins. Yeah man I agree with you, Id be concerned also. Welp I wish the best for ya and hope that hes just sperming around!!
