Question on sumps

What exactly is the benefits of a sump besides more water volume, extra rock for filtration, and any macroalges you put in to filter the water? I mean, does any other part of it help in keeping the water quality up besides what i mentioned first? I also, want to make a homemade sump for a non drilled 150 tall glass tank i am putting together as a reef. Any ideas of how to make a homemade sump for this tank cheap and will function well? I guess i will have to use a hang on overflow. Any suggestions and/or instructions to build this? thanks
