question on sunset monti

I am taking another stab at a sunset monti now that I have more flow and my tank is a little more mature.

I had one in the past and put it at the top of my 180...it bleached and died...couldn't revive it.

I have read that it is better to start the frag at the bottom and move it to the middle out of the focal point of the light. Any suggestions? This is my favorite monti ever and I really really want to keep it!

My tank is a 180 with 3 250w hqi 20k.

The tank it is coming from is a 270 cube with 2x 400 w mh

It looks like the frag is comming from a tank with as intense, if not more lighting....so you "could" possibly put it where you wanted....but your correct and the safest to do is start it on the bottom.

The Sunset does like a fair amount of light and can really pop in direct light. You may want to consider placement being more towards the bottom, but in direct light as it will take up a lot of real estate as it grows and you want to be able to see it without looking down into the tank.

My sunset is looking great on the sand in a 180 with 250w MH XM10k's. In your case I would start it on the sand and move it up to where you want it, or use some sort of shading just to be safe. Its tough to know how used up the other tanks bulbs are. You could always check things with a PAR meter if you have access to one, and use that info for its first placement.

I had asked this on the other sunset thread but i was woundering this monti is a quick grower. I assume yes since dots said it takes up alot of real estate.

once established yes, and I find not as easy to relocate without moving and entire rock or chipping it up.....I have seen some take over an entire rock...I kinda placed encrusting types like anenome.....kinda isolated in its own area.....or mount it on a tonga branch and let it wrap around it and down the branch which is neat too and easy to relocate as you need.

Another reefer by the name of tfp is where I saw this very thing applied to the coral in question.....with my own very eyes!!

And so now shall you.....see it travel down into the background? Marvel of coral aquaculture skills if I ever saw!!

I have mine on the bottom under 250W phoenix 14K it is doing great. Got it as a tiny frag.

I've found sunset monti to be pretty easy. Make sure your params are in check and acclimate it to the light and you'll be fine. Mine's flourishing under vhos. It does grow like a weed once it takes off, so make sure you put it in a good spot. The up side is that its a pretty desirable coral and frags are great for trading.

I defnitely regret placing mine in a prime real estate spot. This thing is like the bubonic plague when it gets going; it's spreads fast and kills anything in it's path haha.
