Question re: Dendrophyllia received from Reefs2go

Sorry for the delay in posting. I wasn't signed up for auto email notifications...am now.

I moved the dendro to a smaller tank where I can reach it more easily for feeding. The out of focus photo was taken several days ago. This is the first time I have seen it begin to extend its polyps. This seems to be the most it will emerge. I do have a red turf algae problem though. Also, the dendro looks like it might be forming a little nubby on one side. What do you think of its progress?

I ordered three heads from Reefs2go on black friday along with some other corals. After three weeks of delays I finally got my order. the frag I got had 3 heads that were between 1/4 and a 1/2 inch in width and two extra heads that were about a 1/4 inch. I've had them for about three and half weeks now and they still haven't opened up but still seem to be alive. Every time I feed they puff outward out of the skeleton but never extend their tentacles. I'm really thinking I should have ordered them from somewhere else. Good luck with yours and keep us informed if you figure out how to get them to come out fully.

Dont order from reef2go, they are very inconsistent and the fish/corals I have seen from them are usually low quality, if they are alive. If you order the bag of 500 pods, you maybe get 50. They should stick to selling hermit crabs, and snails

lol corallus, thats just false. i have ordered pods from them multiple times and the bags are always LOADED with them. im not the biggest fan of the filter media, but it could be worse

They are definitely a hit or miss. My first order from them had an exploded sun coral, the others were definitely rinky-dink. What more ticked me off was the color of the rock flower anemone: pictured red and got a white/brown. Can't really complain for $9.99.

You pay for what you get with them, however if you're looking for some quality large pieces I've always been impressed with AustinAquaFarms. They have spectacular acans and in/out everything else. However when it comes to the pods and zoo's R2G is pretty awesomely priced.

I'm sorry for your losses. My dendro never had a chance.

The single head I received looked like it was a tiny bud off of a parent colony. Dendros tend to be larger than sun corals, so I was surprised in the size of this short, tiny head. I worked with it for months, but never got it to extend the first polyp. I know too much light can cause this, so I placed it near a ledge and fed it daily. To feed, I would remove the dendrophyllia totally submerged in a cup of tank water and feed it outside the tank to make sure the food didn't float away. When the coralline started taking it over, I knew it would never open. I still have not tried another one.

I do love my blastomussa, duncan corals and acans, so until I run into a dendro colony, I'll be happy.

I received a Dendro that would not open up as a rescue case from my LFS. The way I was able to save it was to take a tweezers and CAREFULLY place a small piece of white worm in its mouth. Not stuff it it in, just get the tip of it in. I am sure you could use Mysis, but I am a big fan of live food for both fish and corals. there is nothing like the wiggling of a live worm to get a feeding response. I had to do this about 3-4 times before it would open my itself. It is doing great now. Open most of the time and eats everything I throw at it.

I had a small colony that was almost wiped out by long hair algae. By the time I was able to get the algae under control the dendros were close to death. Shrunken even. I squirted the juice from live clams at them. It worked. Over several months they recovered. Even one that no longer had tentacles. They are tough little guys.

So where do you get white worms. I have some black ones I have been able to keep alive for almost a year now. I live in WY. No local fish store. So I try to make sure I can feed my pets before I get them.

Do a google search for "white worm cultures". They will send you a small amount of worms which, with a little effort, you can culture into a steady supply.
