Questions about Anthias

Was thinking about trying to get a small harem of Dispar Anthias in my 200g. Maybe just keep 12 females and let them decide which to turn into a male. I know that in small numbers, sometimes the female at the bottom ends up getting picked on till she pretty much dies and then the cycle starts all over again. I'm wondering if there is a magical number that I should consider to help prevent this from happening?

Do you have pics of your 200 gallon for reference? Maybe that would determine the magic number.

I had 5.. went down to 3.. added 3 more to 6.. went down to 4.. and now I have 4... seems like I have 2 pairs now

I plan to add different anthias instead of a huge harem..

Thats a nice setup! Plenty of swimming space. With these guys, just get more than you need since most of the time you will loose them through the QT process.

Yea PGA. I usually do that with everything. Picked up x10 baby clowns since I knew I would end up with 6-7 by the time it was all over :/

Have u considered lyretails or Bartletts? IME, a lot hardier than dispars.

all i could focus was the scratches on that acrylic tank =(

Thats the thing about acrylic, but it feels better to know it can always be removed even with water in it. I"ve managed to pull this off with my 40 gallon before.

I don't have any personal experience with them but am also looking to get a harem of them for my 300g. From all the research that I have done, it seems that the peaceful species like the Randall's and Dispar seem to get along much better with each other compared to lyretail or squareback who tend to always pick on one another. But personally i really love the coloration of the Lyretail so still unsure of what route I will go, but will probably get 5-7 of them.
Make sure you do a thorough qt on whichever one you decide to get since they are known to be susceptible to uronema.

I have pulled out all the smaller ones on the outer panels using an orbital and Novis 3 then 2. The deeper ones are actually a little deeper and think that it’s better to have them handled by a pro so the proper blending can be achieved. Plus while he’s here I can have him address the inside which I can’t get with water in the tank
