Perhaps a bit of background first. I have a 150 gallon tank which was custom-built by Reef Savvy in Miami. This tank (although quite new) will eventually be a full-blown SPS system, and will be run in a bare-bottom format. In previous aquariums, the bare-bottom (which I like to keep "spotless") became very hard to clean with normal tools, without damaging the corals. What I ended up doing was using a magnet cleaner with a scraper attachment to clean the bottom of the tank.
I would like to use this method to clean the bottom of my new tank as well, using a quality magnet, however I have a couple of issues. On my new setup, the bottom glass of the aquarium is .5 inches thick, the mat underneath is .25 inches thick, and the wood under the mat is .85 inches thick. This all adds up to a thickness of 1.6". The largest magnet I can find that a scraper can be attached to claims use only up to 1.5 inches, so I'm 1/10 of an inch too thick.
1. Will they still be ok to use to clean the bottom of my tank?
2. Which are stronger magnets, the Algae-Free Great White, or the Magnavore 10?
3. If these won't work, do you have any suggestions?
Thanks!
