Questions about modding a Euro-Reef skimmer

I recently purchased a used Euro-Reef ES5-3 skimmer & would like to mod it with the gate valve and possibly a mesh or pinwheel wheel upgrades. Does anyone have a link to a thread where I can learn more about these modifications. Or does anyone feel like explaining what they are and why they will make my skimmer perform better. I tried searching but the only threads I get are people trying to sell their old skimmers.

no need to mod that model

it works great out of the box but the gatevalve makes adjusting it easier
