Questions about placement of corals.

First, let me just say how happy I am with my order from LiveAquaria, specifically Diver's Den. I have ordered from LA before (a Powder Blue Tang, and 4 ORA frags). While the ORA frags had some adjustment problems after shipping, I did manage to save most of them with a little luck and a lot of superglue :D . Nonetheless, LA gave me a credit for the two problem corals. More than I expected, frankly. The PBT was flawless in QT from day one, and still is, now in the main display.

Back to my current order. The Diver's Den corals came in much better. The heat packs were even still warm. Great polyp extension 15 minutes after introduction to the tank (even after Lugol's and flatworm exit dip). I also want to mention how excellently represented these corals were by their pictures. I know vendor's can sometimes "adjust" pictures a bit too much, making corals look insanely beautiful. No such problems here.

So my questions. Can you recommend placements for these three corals:

My tank equipment and specs are in my sig. The tank is 30" tall, and the lights are about 6-8" off the water surface.

TIA

SDguy,

These corals prefer their placement in the middle to top of the aquarium. They should be kept in high lighting with a strong water flow. Ideal temperature should be kept between 72º-78ºF with a specific gravity of 1.023-1.025.

If we can be of any additional assistance, please feel free to contact our Live Aquaria Department at 1-800-334-3699 or via email at customerservice@liveaquaria.com and we will be happy to answer any question(s) you may have.

How long should I wait to move them from the bottom of the tank? ie what lights were they under at your facility, and distance from lights as well?

SDguy,

The Acroporas were placed approximately 30” under 20,000ºK Metal Halide lighting at our facility. We would recommend keeping the corals in the lowest area of the aquarium and then moving them slowly up the rock. There is no specific time frame to follow, as you will need to keep an eye on the corals to see if they are adjusting well to the lighting and the water conditions. You are able to determine if the corals are being moved too fast if the corals appear stressed.

Feel free to contact us with additional questions.

SDguy,

More care should be taken when moving the Desalwii Acropora for placement as this coral requires less lighting and will not be able to be placed higher on the rock.

vijaym85,

Our coral farm uses Ice Cap 400watt HQI double-ended metal halide bulbs and Custom Sea Life 54watt T-5’s. These bulbs are located on a lighting rail in order to distribute the lighting more evenly over the corals.

Feel free to contact us with any additional questions you may have.

Thank you. That is actually the one I had no info for. Much appreciated.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but what 400watt lamps are you guys using over Live Aquaria with the Icecap ballast?

Thanks
Nick

Njb2345,

Thank you for your post. Our Ice Cap 400watt HQI double-ended metal halide fixture uses the double-ended 400-watt bulbs 20,000 K. Here is a link to that item http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=13319&prodid=25292&catid=3 item# 21811.
