Questions before ordering

Hey guys, i've been lurking in this TBS forum for a while now, drooling over all your pics. I'm getting ready to set up a 36"x36"x24h rimless cube (upgrading from a 46g bow) and want to purchase from TBS. The only thing is I'm wanting to go a bit more minimal this time with my aquascaping with both the rock and the sand. So instead of going with the 130g package, I need to figure out which smaller package would work better for what I'm trying to do. For instance, how would I know how many lbs of sand I need if I didn't want any more than an inch of sand in my tank? Is there a calculator available? How many inches of sand is typical to get from TBS when ordering the recommended size package for your tank? Wouldn't height of the tank make a difference and create variances?

I want to get all new sand for this build. Rock I can go either way with. If I get too much from TBS and can always find local reefers to take the extra and if I need a little more, I can always use some of my current rock as base rock. I also have a bunch of clean up critters to mover over. So I'm not really starting from scratch.

Tank should be ready this week or next so i just need to plumb it and then place an order. :bounce1:

When I ordered my package I went 1 size smaller than my tank size, I ended up with a pretty uniform 1". The rock on the other hand even at a size smaller would have filled the tank twice with no room for the other goodies. I actually had to give away 3/4 of the rock in the second batch and about 1/2 the extra goodies he sent and I still have a bit too much LMAO. Richard definately makes it worth your money and then some and then your buddies who have tanks day and then... you get the idea.

I would E-mail him directly and ask with your tank dimensions what you need/want and he will get it right.

Hi There!

I'm new to the site... and the hobby, I'm working on getting a 12g tank set-up. I've been wanting to order some live rock and live sand from TBS, but I also have some questions:

1. I guess this would go to Richard or anyone else who knows the answer- I'm here in the Tampa area, and I saw on your website that you can arrange local pick-up? How does that work exactly?

2. If I do buy some live rock, and allow it to cycle in my new tank will I be able to leave the tank alone for a week? (probably over a month after tank set-up and without any fish, maybe just some hermits/snails)

Thanks guys!

Hiya

It takes one pound per gallon of real live sand.....to give you the proper amount for a happy tank!

Hiya

Just fill out online order form with comments, we can meet up when you are ready!

You can put 12 pounds rock and sand in at the same time....then it will be ok until you are ready to add the rest of the rock/critters!

d2mini- You will want the appropriate amount of sand for your tank size as the grain size and critters require a certain amount of depth to thrive. It is not like regular sugar sand, there are all sorts of tunnelers, crawlers etc. that need that depth. I would guess it comes to about 1 1/2" if you get the package size for your tank. The rock, on the other hand, you can go sparser with if you want that look, or put some in your sump. I would consider getting a package for a 100g tank and adding the extra 30# sand to make up for it. That would probably get you about where you seem to want. Just my opinion.
