Quick chemiclean red slime question

Hello all, started medicating my tank today with chemiclean red slime remover, followed all the instructions very carefully, only thing I have a question about is I have an air stone and am wondering if it really matters between placing it in the dt or sump? Right now I have it in the sump. Thanks!

do you run a skimmer? If so you prob wont need an airstone, however your skimmer is going to loose its mind for several days. You can just let it overflow until it regains its sanity

To answer your question: if your return pump is on then it shouldn't matter I would imagine

I was very leery of using any type of chemical but broke down and tried chemiclean. I didnt use an airstone and did just what Savant posted. Worked out well and had zero ill effects.

I think they say to turn off your skimmer because it wont work for skimming and really does foam like crazy, it would drain your tank if you didnt let it flow back into the sump.

Like Mark428 I tried it but left the skimmer overflowing into the sump and had no ill effects from the chemiclean

That is a good decision as it will deplete O2 in the water. It also kills off a lot of good bacteria so keep an eye on your parameters after treating and watch your feeding. I am not a fan of the stuff as it's only a temporary fix and if you don't resolve the underlying issue, it will come back within a couple months. If you don't address your nutrient and flow issues, all you will have accomplished is stressing your tank and killing off lots of beneficial bacteria.

Thanks Slief. I believe my cyano problem origanted from my sandbed. I removed all the cyano and reduced my sand bed from 2" to 1", in hopes to make it easier to maintain in the future.

You will need to be vacuuming your sandbed more often. Vacuuming it is very important. I would also suggest some sand sifting starfish as well as some sand sifting snails or fighting conchs. They will help with keeping the sandbed cleaner but you will still need to vacuum on a regular basis.

How do you manage that with a large system??

It'd be best to take off the cup of the skimmer and let it foam. It all depends on how much cyano/organic matter that is being reduced, you need as much oxygenation as you can get to avoid a terrible outcome.

I pointed all powerheads at the surface and added airstones to keep O2 levels up when I used it years ago. I didn't run my skimmer. Had no issues

Hoping you guys can answer this question real quick. At 12 noon marks 48hrs of chemiclean. Had about 30g of ro for my wc today, go to my ro container in my basement, turns out there was a crack in the bottom of the trash can, now I only have about 5g, and a huge mess in my basement. I went out and bought a new trash can, got my ro going. My question is does the water change have to be exactly after 48 hrs? It's going to take a few hours to get another 20g of water of so then a hour or 2 to mix it. Is this going to be a huge deal?

I hope there is a DI attached to that RO unit or you are likely to continue to have algae issues. But, to your question you should be fine just make sure you have good circulation for O2. Few hours should make a difference. I didn't time mine out for 48 hours I just did the water change when I got home from work

There is! It's above my membrane, stuffed as much brs color changing di as I could. And ok thanks! I didn't want my whole system to crash over a $20 trashcan. All live stock looking good, sps are still showing pe so I think I'm alright atm.
