Quick Question From A Newb

Its been a while since I have done anything with fish tanks besides running my 55gal FOWLR. I used to have a 55gal reef a few years back.

Anyways my question is, the other day my wife and I were in our LFS, and they had one of the NanoCube Deluxes on display. The set up was beautiful and she fell in love with it. It had a few xenia, polyps, a few frog spawn branches, and some shrooms, lawnmower blenny, and 2 small clowns. The the thing that got me was there was an anenome that was in it, and it looked healthy and the clowns were loving it.

I know the Deluxe has the upgraded lights, but is it really enough for an anenome??? Its been a while, but have lights really come that far??

If it is a posibility of having that same setup with the clowns and the anenome, I would love to set one up for my wife. Or is it just a fish store set up that wont last, but looks good??

I dont own a nanocube, but I know that clowns hosting in an anenome is a hit or msis, and I dont think they would do well in a nano tank.

As henry said anemones are hard to keep in the best conditions. It is generally reccomended that those with small, or new tanks to stay away.

FWIW, I have one of the original 12g Nanocubes that I modified with additional pc lighting (88 total watts), and I have a RBTA in it now for 1 1/2 years, and it's been growing. Eventually down the line, if it gets too big I'll have to move it, but my two ocellaris clowns have been enjoying it.

Kind of off topic, but I have a question about the lighting in two systems.

I was looking at the Aquapod with the 70watt MH. What would be the difference in the Aquapods 70watt MH vs. the Nano Cubes 72watt PC's???

Difference is in the fact that MH is a single point light source, more like the sun. So you get the shimmer effect in the tank, which is very desirable by some people. I will leave it to you to read in the Lighting forum about spectrum, par, power, etc...

In general, my experience has been that MH = better color and growth and more heat and PC = less heat and not as good a color or growth. Your mileage may vary....

My LFS has a rose BTA in a nano cube. Hard to say how it's doing.

Shimmer effect is nice, but MH you are stuck with one color temperature unless you have supplemental lighting. If you use T5s you can have 3-4 bulbs with different color temperatures. Kind of helps to cover all the bases.

I use MHs on my nano, but being a point source, the intensity is not even, so coral placement is more crucial. I'm thinking of T5s for another nano I'm setting up.
