Hey guys fedex just brough my 24 g aquapod so I am setting it up. The directions say to use gfci electrical outlet. Anyone know what that means? Also the bag of white rings is what I need to take out for a reef tank right? There are 2 big blue sponges in it do I leave both. I am happy fan noise does not bother me like some are saying, but might be because is quiter than a/c, tv, ceiling fans, and kids.....lol thanks for your help.....I am excited to go pick up water, sand, and rock. Found a great lfs yesterday after visiting about 10. Even will do 10 gallons of water out of his tanks for stability:) Fish tanks galor, all looked healty. A big change from some of the stores I saw. Thank you for helping a newbie......WE CAN'T WAIT TILL TIME TO GET A CLOWN:)

a GFCI outlet is one of those plugs that has the RESET button on it. It is used when a plug is 6' or closer to a water source (+/- depending on your local building code). The tank will work fine without the GFCI outlet, but it is an added precaution to electrical shock/damage. if you want to replace a regular outlet with a GFCI outlet - you can pick one up at Home Depot for about $15 and it is installed with minimal know-how. if you can use a screw driver, you can install an electrical outlet.

Yes - remove all of the white ceremic rings. you do not need them. as for the sponges - i use one at a time. remove and clean and replace with the dry one once a week.

GFCI and surge are 2 different protection factors. a GFCI outlet monitors the amount of current flowing from the hot to the neutral side of the outlet. if there is any imbalance (ie a water spill), it will trip the circuit and stop an electrical fire from happening.

A surge protector is just that - it will regulate power spikes through your grid (due to anything from lightning to a large appliance turning on/off)

When water is involved in the equation, GFCI always be in there too.

Aural do they sell surge protectors with the gfci? Sometimes my gfci's blow on my kitchen stuff would it kill my fish? I know it is protection, but if it makes my pump not work how long would they have.
