Quiet pumps?

We just purchased a 100g tank that came with 100 lbs of live sand and 150 lbs of live rock. It has a nice sump and 3 not very nice damsels. The tank was under- lit with a 2 x 65w power compacts. We will be upgrading to 4 x 95w pc's. We're excited to get the coraline algae growing like it should.

Here's my problem: The system was hard plumbed with a submersible pump (no brand name). When we fired it up, the noise and vibration was terrible. I consequently bought soft tubing along with a SCWD and placed the pump on a soft foam pad. I hope that this will reduce the noise. If not, I'm buying a new pump. However, I haven't a clue about which pumps are the most quiet and can run a SCWD.

Any suggestions?

Eheim 1262 with a SCWD, 1260 without one.

It seems that everyone has a different sensitivity to the noise level that pumps produce. I personally am very critical of pump noise and have gone through a number in the past for that reason alone. Two that I find acceptable are the Eheim 1250 and the Mag 9.5. The Eheim being the best relative to noise. Just my 0.02.

For that size tank you're probably wanting good movement. I tried a sqwd on my 75 and it killed the pumps output and switched like every couple seconds. Pulled it right out. Now my Sequence Dart and Oceans Motions Squirt is on order. I've heard great things about this combo.

I'll just say that while I have no experience with Eheim pumps I have very extensive experience with Eheim canister filters and know that their quality is as good as it gets...and if sjm817 recommends them, that's enough for me. I'd add that the Mags, from my extensive experience with them, are also really silent and reliable. So...thereyago.

I also like Mag pumps, in certain applications. I've had Mag3/5/7 and 9.5. In my case, to my ears anyway, the 9.5 was quieter than the 7. I was blown away when I went from the mag7 to the Eheim 1260. Noise wise, no comparison. What surprised me is how much more flow the "635 GPH" Eheim had over the "700 GPH" Mag. The other thing I saw was there was no change in flow going from 1" to 3/4" plumbing. Mags need large dia plumbing to perform. This leads me to believe that the Eheim is much better with head loss than a Mag. A SCWD reduced my Mag9.5 down to a Mag5 level which is more than a 50% loss. The 1262 would probably be a good pump with the SCWD because of that.
