Quietest External Pump?

Been Running Velocity T3-T4 Hybrid for 3 years now. I take it out every 6 months for a cleaning. Nothing but reliable for me... and Silent!

If i were to use Velocity's for both a closed loop and very slow refugium, which models would I want? I'm getting sold on these! Quiet is the ticket for my wife to accept any new equipment.

Looking for a quiet closed loop pump that will handle two SeaSwirls in a 225 gallon (one on each side, 72" length tank)

and looking for a quiet pump for a refugium with slow movement and ability to adjust up or down in speed as desired.

I've been using the T4 for 2 yrs now on my closed loop and I agree they are dead silent, but they do put out quite a bit of heat and like 481824 said you have to clean them A LOT because of the build up. I end up cleaning mine every 2 months and some times sooner, I've actually had them stop working becuase the build up was so bad. The massive heat in the pump is the reason for the high build up. So, an external pump with a fan should not have the build up.

For my new 120G tank I'm going to stop using the T4, I bought a Panworld 150 that I'm going to use instead. It will be for my return pump. I love the T4 but I hate having to disconnect everything to clean it every couple of months.

H20 Cooled, yes my experience with the T4 pump was not a very good one. However I am glad it works for some people. It truly is silent if that is what someone is looking for. The only reason I always bring up negative points about the T4 when anyone mentions it is the bad experience I had with it. I had to run a chiller ( I estimate the T4 put about 4-6 degrees additional on my 90), and after about a year I woke up frequently to find my pump had seized (usually at the most inconvenient times but had to be attanded to). I had to take the pump out of the system clean with vinegar chip away the calcium and repeat. Way too often to justify its "quietness" IMO. I agree about the excessive heat causing the internals to calcify, the pump is cooled buy the medium it is actually pumping but since the impeller housing is Titanium it has high thermal conductivity and holds heat constantly as opposed to other pumps...

One word of advise if you get a T4 dont forget to put Unions and ball valves on both sides of the pump to easily remove it from your system for maintenance.

I am really not trying to put down anyone who has a T4, I mean I owned one in the past as well. Just want to share my experiences and out a word of caution from what I went through.

Another vote for Velocity (aka Poseidon) T3 / T4. My T3 has been running for over 2 years on my current system, and like others have said it is silent, you have to put your hand on it to know it's running. It does raise my tank temp by a couple of degrees though.

Another quiet pump is Gorman Rupp (aka GRI). It is not like the Velocity series, but nothing else is either. I actually bought a GRI520 to replace my T3 but it was too much flow for my system (still have it if anyone is looking for one it's brand new, pm me!).

IT was 6-7 F difference between the Iwaki 55 and T4 in my 90G tank. Yes the Iwaki was louder but i just keep the pump in a larger pad and the solve my problem also the iwaki is now been running two years with no cleaning.. i had to clean the T4 every three months sooner if i run the calcium high but it was in a FO tank so i run low calcium but still will bind up very fast.
:D

I run a 120 w/ 20g sump.
2x250W HQI
DAS EX-2 Skimmer (uses two aquabee needlewheel pumps)
Ca reactor (eheim pump)
Velocity T3/4 return pump.
Maxijet 900 for phosban reactor

I still need a heater to maintain 78 degrees with the lights off. Lights on no more then 80, but I turn them on from 8PM on 2AM.
