From what I can tell the Cody is not a great anemone to have (but it was a nice gift from the GF). Seeing I want to an anemone to host one of my clown fish what would the safest bet?
For a beginner in anems, I think BTA's are the easiest and hardiest to keep. Can be kept well under lower lighting with supplementation from food. They seem to do well, even when coming in bleached or tiny(although these qualities are not good and you should be leary of any bleached anems.
Mine don't either. They retract usually in the early afternoon to expel waste but don't stay that way for more than 45min or so before they are expanded out and begging for food again.
Not meaning to argue with anyone, just providing another point of view/experience.

they don't know any better
Condy anemones are anemones of the Atlantic ocean where they never encounter clownfish in the wild. You throw a clownfish from the pacific ocean with a Condy from the Atlantic ocean and many things can happen.
1.)The clownfish might try to host the Condy as a pacific anemone and might have success.
2.)The clownfish might try to host the Condy and the Condy reacts as a predator trying to kill its prey and eats the clownfish.
3.)The clownfish has nothing to do with the Condy.
4.) The clownfish hosts the Condy for a while and then something triggers the Condy to eat the Clownfish.
Condy's don't "tend" to do anything. I have seen all of those 4 possiblities happen.
