R/O unit

I am going to buy a R/O unit and i am seeing their is a lot of options im looking at a 6 stage, some say 0 ppm some dont and their is a 7 stage what do you think i should do?

I like the FilterGuys. I have the filterGuys Ocean Reef +1...its a 5 stage unit & I get 0.0 TDS everytime. Its only $199.00

I dont like buying things like this off of ebay. If you have problems with it, who are you going to call ?....With the FilterGuys you just call Jim.

Sorry but i am asking about the filters in the link that are around $100 what would be better the 6 stage, 6 stage 0 ppm , or 7 stage?

The 6 stage for $90 is very similar to what I have & it's been great for 10 months. Also bought mine off ebay for around $100.00

The only problem I see is the lack of a flush valve for the membrane but I'm sure you could get one pretty cheap sometime. It extends the life of the membrane.

If you can swing it, I'd grab their tds meter for $19.00. I have the same one & it works well.

All in all, I think it will work just fine for you.

One tip: run the unit only once a week & make enough water to last. This will extend the life of the filters, resin & membrane. As I mentioned, I'm on 10 months with the same filters & still 0ppm. I would change filters after a year even if still reading 0ppm.

Honestly, you get what you pay for. You will spend much more on these units than buying a quality unit in the long run. Cheap filters, DI is not setup correctly and will be wasted soon, extra stages that aren't needed (which you have to replace with more extra filters not needed later), etc.

I know it doesn't answer your question, and you will find a lot of people here that are happy with eBay units... but it's really not the way to go if you do some extended RO/DI research.

This small unit from BuckeyeFieldSupply blows those out of the water, and the cost in filters and DI you're wasting on the eBay unit (when correctly maintained) will likely recover your cost in less than 12 months.

While there are better filters & membranes, I do not agree that the unit he's looking will cost him any more in the long run.

99% of all units use the same size pre-filters, resin & membrane canisters. So when it comes time to change filters you can simply upgrade if you wish.

My unit has 6 stages & drops my tds to 0ppm. The BFS unit you mentioned is nice but to say it "blows it out of the water" is going a little far. Again, mine has ebay filters & works just fine plus I'd rather have 3 pre-filters & 2 di canisters.

I do like to support sponsors when it makes financial sense.

Ed - as you can see we (myself included) tend to defend our purchases to the end.

The DI replacements due to channeling and horizontal instead of vertical placement could run you $40-120 alone.

Again, just a matter of perception, how much water you create, what the TDS is at the faucet, how well you maintain your unit, etc. As mentioned, many people are happy with them, may people wouldn't use the unit if they could purchase it for $20.

Im with rokle on this one... You get what you pay for.

If your not looking to have it long term and willing to pay to repair or fix your mistake, i would get a well known one instead.

Not to hijak, but I have been told that mounting you DI resin vertical not horitzontal gets more life out of it. Is this true, why do all suppliers mount them on top?

All suppliers don't. The ones who try to rig up units with wrong or drinking water specific parts do

I have a unit from them and have been very happy with it. Simple to install and the quality of the water from the unit made a noticeable difference in my tank over the water I was getting from the fish store.

Pick a reputable company and enjoy. I went with bulkreefsupply and I am very happy, but the others mentioned are probably right about the same quality.
