i have been reading about octos for some time now and was considering a tank but found a bumpo in my plan...all of my tanks run on my tape water....and i just dont have the money for an R/O unit....so i think my octo tank will have to wait till after 6 years of college...

Well, maybe you might just get lucky!?

have you tested your tap water for nitrate, phosphate and copper yet? Maybe its not so bad???? Have a LFS test it for you.

Sometimes you can buy RO water from your LFS...

You are in college and need to find RO/di water? Go check out the biology building. I live in hanover (dartmouth college) almost every lab in the bio building has a RO unit, i just asked someone and they said it was fine to bring in some gallon jugs and take thier water.

If you are into cephalopods for the haul, your best bet is to get a ro/di unit. I started out lugging water from the pet store. I carried home 1 gallon jugs. I then switched to 5 gallon pails. The best investment I ever made with keeping marine tanks is a 4 stage ro/di system and a 200 gallon bucket of good salt.Im sure you can do with some tap waters or a simple 2 stage ro/di unit however.....To be honest, nothing makes me feel better about the quality of my tanks than knowing the water I use is the most pure it can be, these animals can be very sensative water conditions. O.bimaculoides is a very hardy species. You could encounter a more difficult unknown species someday and good water quality may make a difference.
