Rabbitfish

Would a Rabbitfish be ok housed with Firefins, Common Clowns and Flame Angel ? And are they Reef Safe ?

Most rabbitfish are iffy on being reef safe but if you keep him well fed it should be fine not nipping on corals.

Mine seems to be reef safe, I have never seen him nip any corals.

Mine never touched corals, but man, did he eat. Had to get rid of him. He grew WAY too quickly, (it was a white spotted rabbit) and wouldn't let other fish eat. I got him to get rid of hair algae....boy did he. Unfortunately, he was just too aggressive with the other fish. He stayed at my LFS for about 4 months, and just got bigger and bigger. Finally went to a 500 gallon tank, I was told.

Mine is just fine with other fish and corals. He's with a Potter's Angel and a Maroon and is definitely the most agressive, but it doesn't seem to cause any problems. In fact, the only fish that I have trouble with is the Potter's picking at my clams.

It depends on what type of rabbit fish you get. There are many different fish all called rabbit fish. I have had one that would mow down mushrooms like nobody's business. I also have friends that swear by them???? Guess its just a gamble and you have to decide if the gamble is worth the results.

My friend has two that really mowed through his HA.
Only thing is when that was gone they started nipping his leathers.

I had a scribbled rabbit [2 1/2 inches] that ate caulerpa by the bundle. Supplying him with food over-phosphated my tank, leading to more algae growth, and the ingrate nipped my corals when not fed enough, brought ich into my tank, and ate the cleaner shrimp.

i have a virgate rabbitfish and he completely ignores all corals. he devours nori and all food i supply. i do not overfeed and he always is begging. he takes care of any macro algae in the tank and i occasionally throw him caulerpa from the fuge. i have never heard of a rabbitfish being unsafe for reefs. these posts are the first.

Rabbitfish are not considered to be totally reef safe.It seems many will start to nip at corals/clams in the same way many pygmy angels do.I have a Foxface,that has never touched a coral/clam as of yet,but I tend to feed my fish often.HTH

Thanks for all the reply's, I was looking into getting a Foxface, but looks like I'll leave it for now. I was really looking for somthing to keep my caulerpa and macro Algae in check.

I've heard some pincushion urchins may be good for the job ?

Most likely you'd be ok with a foxface. Of the couple dozen people I know with them only one had a problem. It was a real little guy that seemed to like to eat the mouth's of his riccordia. Mine has been a model citizen for about a year and I even "can" hand feed but it freaks me out over the poison spines. He can't wait for the nori clip to get suction cupped to the sides. He's going to accidentally get me one day I know it.
