bought a big beautiful racconn to be certain my lr that was infested with aptasia, is erradicated before i start adding sps frags. Any chance that this fish can adjust to food from me only no snacking on my corrals or clams? I plan on keeping the tank fowlr untill this fish is eating a large varity of fish foods , was thinkin if i can get it use to eating this stuff and keep it well feed maybe he could coexsist in my sps system! I have seen pics of copperband's in sps tanks that looked fantastic, but from what ive read the copperband can and does usely less damage( smaller mouth) than the raccoon , but copper band isnt nearly as hardy, and no gaurantee it will eat aptasia ive had three, only one ate it ( unfortunately he liked corrals too, so he had to go)And all raccoons eat aptasia as in the first hour of addeing fish it ate all the aptasia that was visible:). just wondering if anyone else has tried this fish in a reef tank?

I tried adding some Polyps, mushrooms and such to my FOWLER...My Raccoon was extremely happy with her new snack food and destroyed one whole rock of Polyps and a few Mushrooms before I got another tank set up to move the corals in

She is my favorite fish, eats out of my hand. I got a 46 bow for my corals cause there is NO WAY I was giving up my Raccoon:rollface:

im not gonna put polyps or softies, not even lps, only sps's? And ive seen copperbands kept in sps tanks with no problems, the bio on the raccoon says it likes lps's dosent mention sps's maybe they dont taste as good:)

I suspect each Raccoon butterfly will have its own personality and palette, but mine has never touched SPS corals. He happily munches Aptasia, A. mojano, mushrooms, zoanthids and any LPS coral though. He eats ANY prepared food put in the tank as well. He didn't touch my clams until at least 6 months went by, but then for some reason, he started doing swim-by- nipping and the clams started closing more and more to protect themselves. I removed the clams.

huum well thats good news for me kinda as all im planing on keeping in this system is sps's and CLAMS :( ill wait a bit before addeing my clams! how long did you have the fish in your system before he did start after your clams? And what size was it when you added it to your system? and size of fish now? Thnx for any feed back, second day and fish acts like he hasnt even seen my sps's frags :)

Rascal didn't start nipping at the clams until he'd been in the tank about 6 months or so. He was ~2.25" when he went in...maybe 3" when the nipping started....I don't really remember all that well. If the clams are getting nipped, you'll see them begin to put out less of their mantle.

Word to the wise though - this type of fish IME is tough to trap in your reef!

Best of luck.

well i have a adult like maybe 8inches long and 2 inches thick, was wondering if a juvenile would be better cause it hasnt learned to eat clams where a large maybe has:), at least he hasnt bothered the corrals :)
