im not looking to get one anytime soon but after my next upgrade to a 180gallon ive been instructed by my wife to buy one. she has fell in love with them but i dont know anything at all about them other than what LA says. what are some first hand experiences with these fish??

Excellent aiptasia eaters but not reef safe. Red Sea version is better in my opinion.

so what is it that makes them not reef safe?? i have an eel that messes with the clean up crew so if the cuc is at risk than thats not a deal breaker. otherwise if it coral it eats which ones in particular cause i dont have alot of coral and would rather have fish that coral anyways.

It will likely eat coral, you will have to experiment to see which corals are safe.
I'd go for a red sea variant, I love mine :)

If you have a Racoon Butterfly fish ensure that the other aquarium inhabitants do not include trigger fish. That is a deal breaker.Triggers can attack butterfly fish ,due to their disc like shape. At least that has happened to me.

What type of trigger was it?

Niger Trigger. the Trigger singled the Racoon out,he never attacked any fish prior, and he was unrelenting.Quite a surprise to me.Had to remove the Racoon, right away. That was in a 125 gal.Due to poor planning ,on my part.If there was a safe spot for the Racoon to hide,in the LR,maybe it would have been okay...but removing it was the only option

LPS eater for sure. I had one that ate about 300.00 worth of frogspawn and hammer corals before I could catch him. Not reef safe at all. Beautiful fish though.

When I had my big butterfly tank I had a pair of the Red Sea Racoon's and agree they are the one to get. I also had a few tangs in the tank, 3 yellow's, 1 purple and one Niger I had more problems with my largest yellow but he was an *** and liked to cut other fish. He got caught on a very small hook with a mysis shrimp and returned to the lfs. Took me a while to catch him doing it. One day I just started seeing cuts on many of my fish, then I saw him go after my Emperor. Next day was at the lfs, I considered making sushi but figured he wouldn't produce enough to make that worth while.

No not reef safe they will eat corals but which ones is different from fish to fish. Aiptasia are gonners when Rocky Racoon is around ;)

Most all of the fish I had would eat out of my hands and the Recoon's were the first to do so. Get one or two, you won't regret it.
