Radion Pro or Kessil AP7000?

I think I have narrowed my choice for lighting for my new tank down to the Radion Pro or the Kessil AP7000.

I really like the Kessil - but I think the exaggerated shimmering effect would get to be a bit much after awhile?

I also think that the shimmering effect might take away from the colors of the fish/corals - as the shimmering seems to be everywhere.

Anyone have any input?

I am also a fan of the Radions.
I recently went to a friends house that was using a Kessel AP700 and was not impressed.

I like Kessil because I don't have to worry about spectrum, I choose intensity and the colors I like and kessils ensure that my corals get the spectrum they need. This is why I moved to Kessil because I wasn't confident that I could tune my AI Hydra to the right spectrum even though par numbers were spot on.

I have never used Radions only AI and Kessil.

With the shimmer, I don't mind - it reminds me of when I visit the beach growing up Jamaica, you can lessen the effect of the shimmer by having less surface agitation.

Kessil has come out with some new lens diffuser covers. Not sure what kessils future plans are with these, they are magnetic lens covers, but they do reduce shimmer if that is more to your liking. Pretty clever idea I think, may have more uses other than just reducing shimmer.

Radion Pro or Kessil AP7000?

If money is not an issue I would look at what you're trying to grow and the size tank you have. For example if you have a 4ft tank don't expect one kessil ap700 to grow sps. I think radions are more proven for sps dominant tanks.
The shimmer is pretty exaggerated, some like it some don't, but I have found that the ap700 is slightly less exaggerated than the 360's due to having 2 sources as opposed to one.

If you're not looking to grow sps or not sps dominated at least, then it's a toss up of your personal preference.
As noted before, the thing I like about kessils is you don't have to worry about spectrum. I am a kessil ap700 user but if I could do it again on my tank I would have gone 2 radions for the sps, but I would only choose between the preset color options. I don't believe I, or anyone else in this hobby, is smarter than the pre programmed color options to choose their own that are both functional and appease the eye.

Hope this helps in your decision!

Edit: someone also mentioned reducing surface agitation to reduce shimmer on kessils. While this is definitely true, I've found it pretty difficult to reduce surface agitation while also getting adequate circulation. My opinion is this: if you will really be unhappy with the shimmer, go with the radions instead of trying to tweak the flow the get the right shimmer. It's just too difficult IMO.

The only remaining "problem" for me with the Radions - is that EcoTech support is absolutely terrible.

This quote's exactly what beginners need to learn from researching RC for answers.

Here Mfaso is stating anecdotal information as if it were a fact. I have single AP70P on a 75g, 48 inch long tank that has grown SPS for the past 6-7 months. It is only 10 inches high and maxing out at 80%, and ive grown both Maricultured and Aquacultured acroporas effectively within the 36 inch middle. On the 6 inches to each side ive effectively grown monti caps, digitatas, chalices (bottom of sand bed on edges), even bleached out a few.

So if your parameters are on, and stable especially alk, you can.

^^^^^this for me is important.
While I haven't had either of these lights, I had the rapidled DIY kit that is the same layout as the radion. For me, I could never get what seemed to be the right spectrum. I liked the color for me, got no growth and a friend who is a LFS owner stopped by one day to see my tank says upon entry. Way too much red in there I think. I tinkered with it for a bit then sold them and put up a radium like I used to run. If/when I go back to led I would likely go to the kessil for the ease of operation and the lack of adjustability. Less human error that way to me. Although the radion pre programmed presets could work out. Though they don't have one for tested with SPS yet I have no doubt the light grows SPS. But I do like the simplicity of Kessil

Never had a problem with EcoTech support. Always got an email back with the issue fixed. Don't know where you got the "problem" with support.

I agree. I've used Vortech Pumps in the past and their support was spot on. Support is in Pennsylvania, I could always call and talk to someone, ask questions and they would always take the time to help as much as possible even when my product was out of warranty.

It's all over the Internet, the EcoTech forum on this site, and YouTube videos...

I myself, emailed EcoTech three times now regarding these lights and their MP40 pumps and have never gotten a response.

They also tell you for best results to call them.

If you ever consider Radions, google EcoTech Coral Labs.
They have a sps schedule

I did just see that. Thank you for the heads up, that's what I like about the forum. We can all learn. I was curious even though I would not be buying radions anytime soon as I am maybe going back to school for another degree. :(
But was a good read!
