Raising Fry - Questions

I finally got one past the morph stage, just one but it's a start. I have a second hatch at two days and only 1 death so far. It's a learning process for sure. Here's my current method:

1. I have found that for new hatch's I really like 5 gallon tanks, they are small enough to easily clean. Have enough water to make changes easy and give us room where we have very little. I vacuum them out nightly to keep them clean.

2. 3 days before fry hatch, we setup a tank, add rot's and get them going. I'm looking for a fairly dense rot count before I even get the fry in. Then when they go from their egg sack to rots there is plenty of food.

3. I have found the hard way that I need to leave them in the 5 gallon as long as is possible. Moving them too early stresses them and you get losses. I'm thinking 3 weeks or so.

4. Move them out to a 10 gallon grow out, with a rock, a pvc corner and a small cleaner crew. I've also been playing with an air powered floss filter.

Other things I've learned, no need to cover the sides. It makes no difference, 10 watt 50/50 bulbs seem to work perfect to keep fry from running to the bottom and sides. Co-habitation (fry and rots in the same tank) makes like easy for working stiffs :)

A piece of paper under the light (sitting on the egg crate), really helps (along with the the new light) in keeping them off the glass. Greening the water helps too...

So far so good, but here is my next question: I have one at 14 days, I'm feeding him tons of BBS, rots and trying flake. How do I wean him (and when) over to frozen brine, and how. He's growing like crazy, his tank is teaming with BBS, so if I add frozen he will just ignore them. I'm in unknown territory now, I need to convert him so I can get him switched and growing out...

HELP!!!

Thanks

I no expert, just a noobie like you and learning....
But I would say try adding less BBS to start and mix in the frozen food and it kind of makes the fry eat the frozen, once one of the fry starts eating the frozen, the other will follow.
Hope that helps..... :)

What kind of fry are you trying to raise? If it is clowns i start giving them cyclopeez at a week old.

I should have mentioned that they are Clownfish, false Percula's to be exact. I'll start him on Cyclopeez today, do you still continue to use BBS for a time?

Just trying to work out to convert them over, this is new territory for us :)

Thanks

-Paul-

Try just the cyclopeez for a feeding and see if he eats it. If he does i would not give him any more live.

Here you go.... I have been breeding Austrailian true black and white percs...Semi Picassos and True percs for 8 years now... Get your fry out wait 1 day feed rotifers to tank make sure you gut feed your rotifers larve do not like skinny rotifers day 5 switch to newly hatch brine shrimp day 10-15 ween off brine and give them the food called first bites small green powder at Petco. day 20-25 crushed flake or frozen baby brine.

Thank you for the information, I've been co-habitating the tank. I'll start filtering out both the rots and the BBS, and start moving him over to first bites over the next few days.

I guess the other question is how often are you feeding?, I feed my normal tank once in the morning and once in the evening.

Good information, thank you....

Paul I feed at 5pm when I get home...8-9pm again and 11-12 again I am a night owl..LOL Too many rotifers if not eatin will kill tank water quality fast. Too many rotifers eatin by a larvae will explode.Whatch their bellys do not let them get red they will pop. Silver/Blue bellys means they are eating Days 1.2.3.4. feed rotifers so they have to swim 1 body lenght to get food. Ea larvae must eat @1000 rotifers a day to be healthy.. No kiddn. Later Jason :)

Thanks for the information....

I started him on first bites yesterday, he's already starting to eat it. I also started the other fry on BBS this morning, so far no losses other than the one. I'm hoping this hatch goes all the way through.

10 times a day is pretty intense, are you using an auto feeder?

Thank you...

Here is the deal with raising them take your time when feeding make sure the fish can see what you are feeding them (dense enough) also siphon the bottom of the tank out every day.

I had 500 clowns hatch 3 weeks ago and had 50+ live I had 500 clowns hatch 12 days ago and have had over 200 live this time all due to me having the time to take care of them. Feed them 3 times a day if possible just make sure their stomachs do not pop.
