randall's pistol shrimp questions

Okay, not sure which forum is best.

I had to move around the rock work of my tank. I didn't see if my randal's pistol shrimp was in the same spot or had a new burrow. He hasn't found my yasha gobies yet. I'm afraid that I may have placed a big rock on top of him. I don't think I placed it on his burrow, but it's tough to tell. Do you think this would kill him or would he be able to burrow his way out?

In addition, which do you think is more likely, the pistol moving out of his current spot to find the yasha or the yasha moving out of his current spot to find the pistol?

Thanks!

You may have crushed it. If they have a burrow in the sand, and a huge rock is placed over them, it will crush the sand down, wrecking their burrow, causing it to collapse. Which will kill the shrimp. I have no experience with pistol's but I don't think it would be able to escape if it was crushed by coral rubble or sand.

As for the goby and pistols finding eachother, I think the goby would be the one to find the pistol shrimp since pistols generally stay in one place. And the goby would probably find it as it sifts through the sand and would probably join the pistols burrow.

Good luck

hey thanks for the info. If he's still alive and he had to burrow his way out, how long do you think it would take him to surface and create some new burrows? I haven't seen my pistol since thursday when I moved the rock.

I would say that if you don't see any new burrows or new piles of sand within a week or two then you killed it.

I had a randalls/yashia pair in a bucket while moving things around.....accidentally bumped the bucket which made a little piece of LR(size of deck of cards) slide crushing the pistol.

Good advice. I haven't seen any movement of signs of my pistol moving sand around at all in 1.5 days now.

thanks,
