Randy: silicate problem again w pics this time

yeah, thats some nasty looking stuff! I have no idea what it is, but it does no look like any diatoms ive ever seen.

How fast does it grow? I think id vaccum it out of your tank if possible.

Sure looks like dinoflagellates to me. I would carefully manually remove as much as possible and leave the lights off for a couple days and then run them only a few hrs. a day, and also slowly increase your alk and pH a bit and lower temps a bit and run a lot of carbon and make sure your skimmer is running full blast. After this I would follow up with numerous partial water changes.

randy : tested post ro/di water ...zero phosphate ,silicate ,iron...
tested tank water .1 phosphate...silicates=off the scale on a red sea test kit...
so did i get a bad batch of salt maybe with too much silicates?
my rock is all eco rox from 2 part solutions...no live rock at all..
could it be leaching silicates???
and finally which product is best in your opinion at removing silicates from the main tank???

Siphon it out and do a water changes. de-ionization and Reverse Osmosis can remove silica in a sustainable manner. What is your current turn-over too? Good luck =)

I'm not sure what eco rox is, but I suppose it is possible.

When you say off the scale, are you sure it is high? Many folks that say that about kits are actually detecting none.

no, RANDY... it is the highest value on the kit...says something like 2ppm + I think...
eco rox is dead live rock from the pacific...like marco rocks...

I've read both here and on other forums how those eco and marco rocks can have all kinds of dead encrusted junk on them and must be fully prepped before using them in your tank. Some have also reported really nasty outbreaks of hair algae, cyano, and dinos (like yours) shortly after using them if not fully prepped prior to use.

howard W: that is my fear also..what should be done to prepare the rock???
Randy...i suppose that is my next move ...keep u posted

Hot tuna from your last post it sounds lke you didnt prep nthe eco rock. I have a ton of Marco rock right now cooking. Marco and eco rock both need to be treate the same as Live rock. The reason is becaue it itself was Liverock. And on top of that evrything that was live on it orin it and DEAD. Wht I hghly suggest to do is take te rock out vacuum the tank clean. Take th rock and rinse them under hot water then spray bleach on them. After there spryed with bleach let them sit for 15 minutes and rinse them again w/ hot water. Once all tat is done soak them in buckes of water and Amquel 10x the dosage. Then when there done add a regular dosage of amquel to our tank and placethe Rock back in it. This is what Boomer has done for years to all his rock. If you want start a new thread forhim to respond w/ the title Attention Boomer ;)
