Randy's 180G Reef-Photo Journal

Looking great Randy,

I wouldn't have thought I would like the trimless look, but that looks great!

Keith

Thanks! I kept telling my wife that I was going to take that trim off. She didn't think I should but I still planned to do it. Once the light was hanging it was easier to do so I finally got to it. There was a ton of silicone under it, I spent about 3 hours cleaning it up.

Hey Gabriel - I don't have a whole lot of frags to spare! ;) But thanks for the split!

The thing I'm dealing with lately, which has nothing to do with the light hanging or not, is that the light & tank heats the room up so much.

Congrats on the split!

Yeah, I can't believe how much heat my tank generates in the summer. I've had to speed the fans up to full speed to keep the canopy cool. I also leave the front open slightly. It means if you bend down to look closesly at something in the tank you get a blast of warm air inthe face.

I only wish I had planned for ducting the canopy some how..

I am thinking of splitting off an AC duct to go right over the tank. NOT to cool the tank, but to help offset the general heating of the room. Maybe instead I should put an AC intake right there to suck the heat up and run it through the AC! Or I could do one of those really quiet exhaust vent fans...

1000 watts of lights puts off some serious heat!

You'd probably be pretty with the results of ducting the A/C over the tank. I've got an A/C vent in my fish room and it keeps the room dry and cool, which really helps keep the tank at the right temperature.

I'm going to be installing a heat recovery ventilator this summer; I'm going to have an intake in the fish room and I'm hoping to put one up on the wall by the tank to help suck up the localized warm humid air by the tank..

Wow, Randy, congrats...you've been split! The tank looks fantastic! What a difference with the lights hung. Great job!!

Thanks Marcye!

I just spoke to my AC guy. He said that materials to do a 6" duct over to the tank would cost about $75 (vent and boot, duct, misc) if I want to do it myself. He said he would knock it out for me for $200 total if I want him to do it. So now I have to decide how much money vs. hassle I want to spend...

I am fortunate in that there is an AC vent directly over my canopy. It must be helping because my living room stays cool and my tank stays at 79-80.

Pay it. It's worth it. Going in the attic during the summer heat to cut a hole in the box and then running the tube over and making another hole is a PITA. IMO definetly worth paying 200 dollars to drink beer and someone else get hot.

Well, I was sort of on the fence, but now I'm clearly leaning toward the cold beer and comfy chair side

Let me know how you make out. We're thinking about an exhaust fan system with one on the lights and another on the sump. We're going to be using 400 watt lights and hoping not to have to run a chiller.

If I had a canopy I would have rigged up a vent fan blowing out of the house. I bet it will remove tons of heat if you do that, I think it is a very good idea. But I can't do it with my open top. I am still considering a vent fan from the stand to outside of the house - it would reduce the heat and humidity in the house a bit. Right now I just have fans venting the stand into the house. My stand doesn't have an open back, so if I didn't vent it, I think it would turn into a moldy mess. The inside of the stand is also coated with Thompsons water sealant and also with some white roofing sealant which has some mold inhibitors in it. I've seen others use a two part epoxy coating that really forms a physical barrier - I probably would have done that while the stand was out in the garage if I had heard about it. But once it was in the house I decided I didn't want to deal with the mess and fumes. The white stuff goes on like paint so it wasn't too difficult to use.

Looking awesome! I am so jealous -- wish I had the room for a bigger tank --
Your tank may be smaller, but it is an awesome tank! I'm not sure that my wife would agree that we have room for this beast - but she's stuck with it now

Is this your first split on the thread?
Yep, first split!

Here are some more full tank shots. On these I didn't set the white balance so the 14K lamps come out pretty blue in the photos.

More clam shots - it is angled away from the glass a bit so it's hard to get a good picture - it's colors come out darker than real life...

The starry blenny has grown quite a bit since I first got him. He's also got a big fat belly. I think he eats a lot of sand. Is that normal? I think his big belly is full of sand! He makes huge sand poops all the time!

Hi Randy

the islands look great...as does the fixture. I see what you mean by placing them a bit higher up above the surface. I wish i could remove the trim off my tank also but the problem is that it also stretches accross the tank in two spots (center braces). The light from your 14K's appears alot bluer then whan whats coming from my Geissman.

Blenny a bit overweight.

Great setup man.
