Rant on the use of "forum names" for club business

In the "NYRC February meeting" thread, with regard to Jarrett's request for nominations for club officers, I requested that a list of current members, including both their forum names and full real names, be sent to us privately via e-mail.

My request was ignored. I, and it's safe to say all the other members, have no idea who is currently in this club.

A meeting schedule was sent to us by e-mail. One of the meetings was listed as being at "Charlie Tuna House" (sic).

Ok, first of all, the man's forum name is actually "charliethetuna88"... but not here on Reef Central -- that is his name on Manhatten Reefs! His forum name here is "chuckbuc." Not only is Jarrett confused, but you can be sure a lot of other members are, as well. More importantly, given the history of the strained relations between this club and MR, it's really imperative that a club officer not confuse the two.

Another meeting location is listed as "Bill from Brooklyn." Well who the hell is that? I'm assuming it is not tunicata (William) who I've never heard referred to as "Bill." I mean, even if this is a new member who I never met, it would be nice to know his name. SEND US A ROSTER OF CURRENT MEMBERS.

This practice in this club of using cuckoo names for people instead of real names is, in my opinion, ridiculous.

I DO understand that some people do not want their real full name posted on this public forum; but when it comes to club business, like an election and a schedule for meeting places I strongly disagree with using cuckoo names.

All that said, ranting without making a suggestion for a remedy is dumb; so, let me make a suggestion. Have the webmaster create a members-only forum on the club web site for club business, and require real full names for everyone. Yeah, I know, it'll never happen. Oh... and send us all a current roster, too.

George, there is a private forum on the website, however it is only for officer use. I will discuss with the rest of the club board and see if we can open it up for the whole club with use of real names as suggested. There's absolutely no reason why this could never happen, and your suggestion is definitely valued! The club as most know has been through a bit of a rough patch however with a joint effort and possibly new club board members joining we can strive for bigger and better things! No need for a rant either, you can contact Dr. Harry, Jarrett or me if you would like to make a real suggestion as you have here. Every one is busy, has lives to tend to and unfortunately the club has to be put briefly aside. I encourage you and all current club members to attend our meeting tomorrow (Sunday Feb. 16th) and partake in voting for or joining the club board and help better the club in a more direct fashion. Any way, enjoy your evening and I hope to see you tomorrow George.
 
I can understand not wanting your full name accessible to the masses. I, for one, am pretty well hated around Reef Central (hopefully not in this forum, but as a Mod here, I have some less than admirers out there). Harry has my last name, but it is important to me that it be kept secure. In fact, I'd like to use something else, so that if it did "get out" it wouldn't matter.
 
George I understand you point and I should of comment on it sooner but come on !!! Like Stan said you can pick up a phone and call me just like all the other member do if they have questions. I will not list the members names and will not post there membership. I am glad to give this info at any meeting . If someone was to nominate someone I would let that person know about there membership was past due before nominate them? Like Larry said this should not be public information, when I search on other clubs boards I don't see who is active or not. Like I said before I am willing to show anyone who ask at the meeting who is active members since we keep very good track of this..

As far as the calendar goes it will be updated on our website after this months meeting. I will put full names and RC names so everyone is clear. Sorry for confusion I caused to you and we will consider your suggestion

YOU NEED TO READ MY POST AGAIN VERY, VERY CAREFULLY. I NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT POSTING A MEMBERSHIP LIST HERE ON THE FORUM.

AND AS FAR AS PICKING UP A PHONE AND TALKING TO YOU PRIVATELY, WHY MUST THIS REQUEST BE A SECRET?

I'M DONE. THIS CLUB IS NOT FOR ME. REMOVE MY NAME FROM THE INVISIBLE MEMBERSHIP LIST.

With all due respect, I'm sure this is something that you can work out with Jarrett and Harry, but that's less likely if you try to do it here, in an open forum. I, for one, would much rather not see you leave the club, or forum.
I hope you will reconsider, and at least attempt to reach a resolution in a more private manner.
