 just kidding

Like clockwork it's been balling up almost every day mid-day, just thought I'd share a photo update of my magnifica. :)

Odd to be doing that during day, what color is it, and what lights?

Purple with gold tips, and 3 chinese black boxes at 100% intensity. When I had my 8 bulb ATI fixture it rarely balled up like this, and usually it was only at night time.

August is its second birthday in my care.

Pretty. 100 seems high no?

I have them hung 10 1/2 inches above the water, I've not measured the par but everything seems fine so I'm not really worried about it I guess. When you're used to running T5s, the shadow-y look from LEDs is not desirable, plus it's somewhat helped with the disco effect.

Beautiful...wish I could find a healthy red based Mag!

Nice. Looks really cool balled up as well.

Thanks. :)

Nice, so I'd guess those lights are pretty strong especially high up in column, so maybe reason why.

Yeah maybe, but I ran my T5s 5-6" off of the water so I can't imagine these having much higher intensity, but who knows...

I've owned many clowns over the years and I have to admit, these are probably my favorites. They don't try to bite me when I'm in the tank. :lolspin:

The black boxes have a pretty intense hot spot directly under the center of the light. I’d bet they are quite a bit stronger than the T5s you were running. Regardless, seems happy if it’s been doing well for so long. Might be interesting to turn the lights down a bit for a few days to see if still balls up though. I have black boxes over mine with the blues at 100% and whites around 70%. Plenty enough for my gig and mag.

Yeah those are pretty hot off the bulb, so intensity higher up in column is probably more than what the T5's did.

I went ahead and dialed them back to 75%, it'll be interesting to see if it stops altogether or continues. The past couple of days I haven't seen it ball up, so it may be the light intensity as suggested. I don't think it balling up during the day is a sign of stress, as it's quite common to see them like that in the ocean, so I'm not sure if this is a step forward or backward to be honest lol.

"BonsaiNut: To answer your original question, this is quite common in the wild - particularly at sunset but sometimes even in the middle of the day. I think it has to do with light intensity - and the changing from light to dark. I have seen it in aquariums but only really brightly lit ones."

And that explains that, it seems like light intensity may have everything to do with it.
