RARE TO YOU Frag Swap
It’s time for something a little different… how about a RARES frag swap?
Like all our swaps, the goal is to have a great time while spreading around our corals - since diverse ownership is the best assurance of their survival.
But this frag swap will be a bit different as it will be invite only and exclusively RARES.
Here's how it will work... Each time someone is invited they will identify a rare coral they want (rare to you), and a backup coral (in case no one has frags of your first choice). Those corals will be listed here for all to see.
If you have that coral, and it is in fraggable condition, you respond by posting to this thread or sending me a PM. You will be selected first-come first-served (though BAR BOD members will be given special dibs preference for their dedication and effort). You then request the next rare (rare to you) and a backup.
Participants will bring 2 small frags of the requested coral and one frag of another equally rare coral.
Once at the swap, one of the 2 requested frags will go to the requestor, the other 2 frags will go into the swap. Picking priority will be based on the reverse order in which you became a participant and the list doubles back on itself just like the BAR swaps.
To keep it easy to manage I’m limiting this swap to 20 people. Each will go home with 3 rare corals.
Here’s a hypothetical example:
I start by requesting a Tyree sunset monti. Since you have a Tyree sunset, you post to this thread (or PM me if you’re shy) that you have it. I will contact you to confirm lineage. Once you hear from me that you have been accepted, you request a Purple Monster. Thales, who has a PM (and recites it like a mantra for beleaguered frag swappers) replies to the thread, gets an acceptance by me and requests romel’s snake eyes.
On swap day, you show with 2 frags of Tyree Sunset, and one other rare of your choice. You give me one Tyree Sunset and put your other two frags in the swap. Thales shows with 2 PMs, and something else rare. He gives you a PM frag, and puts the other two in the swap.
When the swap begins the picking order will be Person #20, …, Thales you, me, me, you, Thales, …, person #20. Picking will be in groups of 2 with a 4 minute time limit. This should keep the swap under 2 hours.
Ocean Treasures in San Francisco has generously offered to host this swap in late April. Details will follow.
This is not an official BAR sponsored event, though I expect to see more than a few fellow BAR members there.
Q&A:
1. How will I know that if I request PPE they will be “true†i.e. Blade Perrun PPEs?
When you request a coral, if lineage is important to you, you should explicitly say so in your request. Then, when people respond, I will ask you to work with the responders to ensure the lineage you are looking for.
2. What if no one responds to a request?
If there are no responders for either your primary or backup request after 3 days I will ask you to come up with two alternates. Because of the sequential nature of the prep for this swap, we can’t let any one requester hold it up for too long. (Imagine 20 requests each taking 3 days… We’d have to postpone the swap until summer)
3. How big should my frags be?
Attendees are expected to bring “small†frags meaning ¾†x ¾†, < 1†tall, 2-3 polyps, 1-2 heads, depending on the type of coral your bringing. If you’re not sure please post your question here.
The Rares List (Primary / Backup)
1. Fire Engine Monti / ReefFarmers Sunset Monti
