Notice the dorsal and anal fins. On black durgeons they are solid black, on this fish they are clear with fine lines. Also the fish pictured has a rounded tail with blue edging. Durgeons have a black lyre-shaped tail.

is there a difference between Melicthys niger and Meliccthys indicus?

and what about those clear anal/dorsal fins, as was pointed out?

I just saw a pink tail trigger with an orange tail at a LFS a few weeks ago. It wasn't the light either, it was orange.

I would believe possible pink tail/black mix though.

Here as a for instance. This area has blue bodied pink tails until they hit a certain age......very unique as well.

indicus and niger are different... very different...

M. indicus reaches about 25cm and doesn't usually school. Digs in substrate and hides under sand. It eats sponges, algae, inverts, and crustaceans.

M. niger reaches about 50sm and does school. It's diet consists primarily of calcareous algae and zooplankton.

I don't know any distinguishing features of either though to tell them apart by looking.
