Rattle noise

Ive had my gen 2 mp40w for over a month now.. Has worked good!!! however Im getting a rattling noise due to the wet side and the dry side getting off line...
When i do what the directions say to get the pump as quiet as possible...once the flow is all the way up it pushes the magnet off line.. and beggins to rattle real bad.. I slight adjust it to make the noise stop at full speed..then after it stops the noise on high speed..when the pump goes down to the lower speed(in reef crest mode) it rattles again...

Cant find that sweet spot..

I have the pin spacer set at 1/4 inch fom the beginning. i checked to see if any pins were bent or somethin and they look ok...dont really know what they are suppose to look like though honestly.

When settin the pin spacer up originally could i have slightly bent one? Would the slightest bend be that big of a deal?

If it happens to be the pins how do I replace it? It says not under warranty?

THis was a set it and forget system now its too much tinkering...very frustrating after spending all this money being a broke college student...

I slight bend is no big deal, a bend qualifies when you can see the pin protruding from the front of the pin spacer surface because it has no where to go.

Best way to take care of this would be to email a picture of the wet side components to service@ecotechmarine.com, particularly the drive shaft and bearing. If the drive shaft is excessively worn so soon we may want to replace your drive shaft and bearing, as something could be wrong. If the picture you email is detailed enough then we can get these parts out to you in the mail.

Thanks Tim, Im about to have to go to work right now...but when I get home I will take a picture. Ive never taken the vortech apart soo i dont know exactly how to do it or what to take a picture of.. Im sure its not hard.. ill just look at the manual.

When you mean protuding fon the front of the pin space.. do you mean the side that touches the dry gasket on the glass?
When i first got my vortech the part, I noticed where the sticker is with directions on how to adjust the pin spacer...that there was a little bump (kinda where the pins are on the other side) so the vortech was never completely against the glass because there was that tiny bump. When i messed around with it all night i didnt see the bump. kinda weird The hump is about 1/4inch by 1/4 inch not very big.. thought it was very weird that it had that bump in the beggining.
Could the pin spacers been messed up from the begging? Or iis that bump normal?.. I thought it was normal and thats how it was suppose to be ,soo i didnt mess with anything.

That could have been a bent pin from the factory. If this is the case, we'll replace this for you. Just take a picture of the inside of the pin spacer too, i.e., pull the pin spacer from the dry side and take a pic of the three pins. We'll know what to do. Don't forget to reference this thread in your email.

However, usually bent pins don't cause rattling, they cause excessive heat. So you may have two issues. Either way we'll take care of them so long as we've got good pictures to work with.

COol cool. I will do ASAP when i get home Tim.

Luckily I have a couple back up pumps since the vortech is not running right now. I have a full blown sps reef, so the vortech is a big part. Once I get the pictures to ya and if we figure out the solution.. how long will it take for the parts to arrive? I should be fine with these pumps for now but im only pushin about 2 thousand GPH now instead of 4 with the vortech..

I don't think running the VorTech with this rattle will be a problem at all so there's no real reason to take it down. It should take less than a week for your parts to arrive assuming we can isolate the problem from the pictures.

Ahhhh i just got home from work. Long long day. I am about to take it apart and take pictures... I would use it, but the rattle is pretty loud and it doesnt sound good for the pump whatsoever. Whatever speed its at...after i get it silent like the directions say... the power of the pump moves it and makes a loudd rattle noise..

My tank should be fine for a week or so with the GPH i have right now

I just sent an email to that address.

The pictures were as detailed as I could get them. Didnt look like much was worn.

Having this pump not working after a month seems very odd for such an expensive product. I feel like fixing a broken pump will never make it like new. I TOTALLY understand if this was somethin that happned after 6 months or a year ,but a month? It sounds like somethin was wrong with the pump from the second I pullled it out of the box. (especially after you said that the pin spacer makes a bump on the other side if it gets jammed. which was exactly what it looked like out of the box)

Makes me want a new pump instead of the little parts.

I put the pump together and tried to mess with it again. Something is majorly wrong with this pump. With the correct setting of the pin spacer the magnet wasnt strong enough to hold the pump all the way. Not secure at all. Also the impellar wont spin now. Ive read the directions many of times and is pretty much common sense soo i dont think im doing anything wrong.

Hopefully I can talk to someone at Ecotech tomorrow and get this taken care of.

1. the nut that holds the propeller shouldn't really be REALLY tight.
2. Make sure that every piece is in place.

Thanks a lot Tim for your help!!

I just talked with Steve and he is sending a new wetside with a new pin spacer. Im almost a 100percent positive this should solve the problem.

Just wanted to say I got my net wetside and pinspacer in today. Everything is working wonderfully!

The old wetside and pinspacer is on its way back.
