I've been following this thread and what i can see it look like it works. thinking on setting up a 30gal tank with 20gal sump to give it a try. will be add some LR and sps& softies corals from my disply tank. Like to see if anyone like donate a skimmer that they are not useing for this test witch after im done with the test will get it back. if it works out this will save us a lote money to get the ULN.

and anythoughts you may have on this will be great..

thanks zef

I read this thread this weekend and was curious about it. I will be interested to see what happens. If I had another skimmer I would pass it along to you, but only have my IN-180 at the moment. Good luck and keep us posted.

there's a similar research done in China, using rice husk instead

In this research, rice husk, a lignocellulosic waste from agroindustry, was investigated as the sole carbon source as well as biofilm carrier in the biological denitrification of wastewater in up-flow laboratory reactors. An artificial wastewater with a temperature in the range of 27–33 ?C was used. Fast startup of the reactor and a high nitrate removal efficiency was observed. The highest rates of denitrification about 0.096 kg/m3 d were achieved when flow rate and nitrate concentration were 41.4 L/d and 25.0 mg/L, respectively.

Nitrite accumulation in treated water was practically zero during the experiments. Flow rate and nitrate concentration of the influent were observed to have a significant effect on nitrate removal efficiency. A very sharp decline was observed when the flow rate reached 30 L/d. The reactor had the ability to accommodate a wind range of pH(6.5–8.5) and DO(1.5–4). A time-dependent decrease in nitrate removal ratewas observed after 72 days of operation. And the addition of new rice husk brought about a rapid increase of the nitrate removal efficiency. The results showed that rice husk could be an economical and effective carbon source for the nitrate removal process.

Zef, Very intertesting. I might be willing to give it a shot when I get the sump online as I dont have any corals to risk. that said, I dont have anything growing yet with the exception of 2 fish. hopefully it will be churning tonight.

That's where aurora got the ID. I was think of doing it with corn. Till I seen the threadAbout the rice.

I did some researches on it, I think I'd still prefer NP bio-pallets.. too much hassle for this one. even it's much cheaper..

what size maxi do you need to run it? i have a 400 here that Im not using. or a needlewheel pump that goes with that HOB fuge.

Isn't the whole premise of carbon dosing to have a really good skimmer to pull the byproducts of dosing out??? You may want to make sure it is up to the task. JMO

thanks guys for all your help and offers got everthimg that i need the tank well setup and start tomorrwo. well keep everyone up dated weekly or something happens.
Happy reeffing

awesome ZEF. keep us in the loop. be sure to test everything you can test for. if this works, I guarantee I will have a baggie of rice sitting in my sump...
