RD moded onto Euro-Reef?

Howdy Everyone,

I am wondering if any Red Dragon pumps would be suitable as a replacement to the pumps used on stock Euro-Reef skimmers. I am thinking of swapping out the pump on a Euro-Reef RC180 or RC250. Also, with the pumps listed on this site(I am in canada and this would be the best supplier for me) http://www.aquariumobsessed.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=AOCA&Category_Code=RD I cannot tell whether these are needlewheel or not, and which I would use if I can replace the one on a Euro-Reef.

It appears the RC180 runs off an SP4, the equivalent of a Gen-X 4100 LPH needlewheel pump, and the RC250, on the SP5, a Gen-X 600 needlewheel pump. This pump would seem suitable for the RC180 http://www.aquariumobsessed.com/mm5...e=AOCA&Product_Code=RD-P45M3&Category_Code=RD However im not sure if it would be a little too much water flow on the RC180(1083gph), or too little on the RC250(1585gph).

If I can do this, I belive this is the best option for me in my new tank.

Thanks for the input!

Chris

on the z forum a guy changed the pump on a 12 model euroreef and said it was a little to much

why not sell the euroreef and just buy a bubble king

Well, I dont have a Euro-Reef, and I cant afford a BK, as well as it will not fit in my sump, and no space outside the sump.

Also, I dont know what a 12 Model Euro-Reef is?

I think that the red dragon pumps start @ 599.00 and I dont think they include a needle wheel, like you would need. The genx needlewheel are good pumps, except the genx 1000 needlewheel!!!

If I can drop the wattage and get one of the top 3 if not best needlewheel pumps out there and still stay at a fair price, then thats good for me. I cannot get a BK but would like something with similar quality. An RD pump+needlewheel+Euro-Reef would still be cheaper than a BK and fit in my sump. I would also like a recirculating skimmer which the BK is not, hence setting the RD on a BK.

the skimmer neck has to be sized for the amount of air you are injecting. if the RD injects alot more air than the SP4 (which seems like a no-brainer) then you will just end up with a geyser or you'll have to run the waterlevel so low it will be counter-productive. i'd compromise and get an eheim-driven skimmer.

Ahh yes, I understand now. Thank-you very much for the input!

Im considering a stock Deltec AP701 or AP851(which may be too tall for my situation, hence the 701). I might just make a skimmer to run off an RD instead in the future.
