Re: Tank sizes for Surgeonfish

I've read the sticky and I know bigger is better, both in volume and in length. But, I see many succesful aquarist keeping larger tangs in large 5 foot tanks as opposed to 6 footers. Not sure if I should go with 5 foot marineland DD 250 gallon or the 6 foot marineland DD 300 gallon. Location is the issue, the 5 footer would be more aesthetically pleasing in its spot but am able to put the 6 footer in a different spot. Looking at yellow, hippo, powder blue, and naso tangs. I quess I want someone to tell me that the 5 footer is ok but if not, I would rather have the required space for the fish.

Regardless of the tang you like, I would always suggest you get the largest aquarium you can fit/afford, and go from there.

I would not keep a Naso species in either of those tanks. The other fish should be fine in Both.

It actually isn't the tank volume in that sticky that is of major concern. It is the length mentioned in the sticky that is more important. So you could do the PBT and the yellow tang, but not the naso or hippo.
