Real salt water

No need to be sorry

No need to be sorry

We are all learning here. no need to be sorry. Good to hear or should i say read other peoples opinions

I have an outstanding source of filtered sea water here on oahu, and wouldn't use anything else. The salinity is a touch high, I dilute with RO to 1.025/26. The calcium and alk levels are naturally high. If the source wasn't filtered though, I probably would not use it. We always take chances using water straight from the ocean, hard to tell what might be in it bucket to bucket. One tainted batch and you might crash the whole tank. Also makes it difficult to control any bacteria/fungus you are introducing.

Its always a risk, but knowing that, its worked so far.

Strange that a lot of sea water has to be diluted to the "correct" salinity. I'm starting to wonder if the recommendations for aquaria salinity are lower than they should be?

I hear ya... I only bring it down .001 to .0015 not that much. but I used to keep my tanks around 1.023. I have more success at .026~.027.

First off, it has to be tropical water. You can't use sea water say from the state of New Jersey. No hit on the Garden State, but it's not tropical water.

Oh No, I have been using New York water since the sixtees. I guess my reef will crash soon.

Hey Rupie, I started my SCUBA diving career in Sydnew in 1970

FYI â€"œ The Smithsonian, in Ft Pierce Fl. lost most of its reef fish in there 3300 gal display due to polluted sea water they collected in Florida. After testing the water they found pesticides in it.

You never know.
