Really cheesed off

I just put an Anthia and a small yellow wrasse into main tank after everything went well in qt for a few weeks. have not seen them since tuesday, the anthia that is. saw the wrasse yesterday and my blenny. i decided to look for the anthia by taking lr out. still no sign of wrasse or anthia but i found something else. it's a crab with hair on his legs size of a quarter reddish brown with light brown stripes.

i'm assuming this is a gorilla crab and he ate my fish. the only thing i could think of was to flush him out with cold water for five mins.

did this damage my rock forever. there was alot of crevaces and i tried tweezers. i would've liked to use acid after him eating my fish!!


We filter certain words because we don't feel that they belong on a site that caters to all ages. Creative spelling to make them appear anyway won't be rewarded.

If you know which rock he's hiding in you could probably flush him out. You could also set a trap overnight to snag him.

So it appears you flushed the rock. Did you get him? It probably did not damage your rock very much depending on how long you flushed.

Probably killed alot if not all the beneficial bacteria on the rock, but nothing that won't fix itself given sufficient time. Sinceyou already flushed the rock out, just make sure it's well rinse and stick it back in the the tank. couple months from now, it'll be back to it's old rock self.

If you got the same type of yellow wrasse I did, just wait until he burrows and you don't see him for a couple days. That's always fun trying to find a fish and he's in the last spot you would have thought to look, under the sandbed.

i got the little bugger, he's pretty big. i just put the rock in my bathroom sink and ran cold water for about 5 min. lifted up the rock and he was at the bottom of the sink pretty much dead. i am so mad cause i was just finished cycling about a month or so ago and just about every fish i have bought is dead. first ich, then lympho, now 2 murdered!

I would just add that you could use a shot of carbonated water (seltzer water) and not have to immerse the rock in tap water for the next time. I had two mantis shrimp and some gorilla crabs. I just used a large plastic syringe to blast each hole. Believe me the crabs and mantis flew out of their holes!! No damage to the rock as it was only out of the tank a short time.

What is it about carbonate water that causes them to freak out??? Just curious.

The CO2 in the water is what freaks them out.

i'll remember that for next time. good info jmait. hopefully he was the only one. i found the wrasse. i can't believe he took out a pretty big fish. it was about 2 inches and can't find a trace of it anywhere!
