Hello everyone, I currently moved to a new apartment and I cleaned out my 14g tank and wanted to start fresh. My question is if I can reuse the rock that I currently have even after I cleaned it and left it out of the tank for a couple months and basically died out. Will they be good once the cycle of the water kicks in and be live again or should I get new rocks from aquarium store?

Yes you can reuse them and they'll be good as new after you run a cycle.

If you just let everything dry out you may want to cure/cook it for a while before "cycling". You can cycle it right off the bat just be prepared for a long ugly duckling phase.

What do you mean by cure/cook it?

I typically "cure" as part of the cycle but yes it leads to a longer "ugly duckling phase." If you want to speed it up you can submerge the rock fully in saltwater in a separate container and heat it up to about 85 degrees for a few days. That will "cook" and "cure" anything in there that's dead and you can then start using it in your display tank.

No offense but that is not how to cook rock. Cooking is nothing more than extended curing with circulation and periodic waterchanges. 6-12 weeks is probably ideal you can also drop lanthanum chloride to help suck the phosphate out just make sure you rinse well before using. I used a brute garbage can for mine with a power head.
