Recirculating skimmer?

What is the difference, other than it recirculates the water in the chamber, between recirculating and a standard skimmer?

Does it perform better?

Are there applications that a recirculating would be preferential?

There is little difference other then potentially less back pressure on the recirc pump.

Debatable but my vote is no.

External and feeding the skimmer with the overflow drain.

I used an external skimmer for few years and I don't think the performance is much better (if any) than the conventional in-sump skimmers. I used the recirc skimmer only because I didn't have room in the sump. Aside from not having the extra space available in the sump I don't see much advantages in the recirc skimmers.

So primarily it's used as in out of sump applications?
