Recirculation Pump (1073.040) startup problem

I purchased the 1073.40 a few weeks ago for a system pump. The pump was working fine until yesterday. I unplugged the pump and when I plugged it back in it wouldn't start. I disassembled the pump and noticed there were groves in the plastic housing of the drive unit shaft. Is this normal? It seemed to be wear, but like I said the pump has been running for a month. After I put it back together it started right up. I'm concerned this may recur.

thanks

The grooves would be caused by something entering the pump, gravel, sand, small snails. The key will be to prevent this from happening by some sort of sponge before the return pump.
