Quiet Pump for return.
Need 300gph+, max head at 16ft.

I'm using Reeflo Barracuda, and its a bit loud, and overkill.

Check Eheim.. Dead silent!

That's what i was told.
Doesnt seem they are strong enough.... thoughts?

Alot of people use the eheim pumps. I use the 1262 with 2 1" drain lines. This is plenty of flow for my 100 gal. In fact I see a lot of people using it on 180g tanks. Return is not meant to be for flow just to get the job done so the water can be heated and skimmed.

The Eheim's are very quiet, but I think you're head pressure requirement takes them out of the running.

The flowstar's look a lot like the Red Dragons, and if they behave similarly as well, they won't cut it either. They look like the high-flow, low-head variety, which is pretty much the opposite of what you want.

You'll need a pressure rated pump. I've had small iwaki's and while they do hum, it's not too bad. I'm pretty sure it would be quieter than what you have though.

Velocity pumps(aka Poseidon) are the quietest pump around. They are water cooled external pumps, and will add the heat that an internal pump would.

Nothing is quieter- you need to touch it to know it is on. I use a T1(PS1) on my 120. I have also used them from my basement, pumping up 14ft and over 25ft, and still got about 500-600 GPH out of the T4(PS4).

i will second the velocity pumps, they are a dead silent external pump. i saw a tank with a t1 pumping approx 12ft up and it had no issue getting water to the tank. it wasnt a strong flow but that is also velocity's smallest pump.

Velocity pumps are good quiet pumps. However, if you struggle to keep your tank cool then I wouldn't suggest it. They are EXTREMELY quiet, but add a LOT of heat to the water.

Air cooled pumps are typically louder, but don't add heat to the water. Water cooled pumps (like the Velocity) are quiet but transfer operating heat to the water that passes through them.

If you don't struggle with heat, then a Velocity that meets your requirements would be good. If you do struggle with heat, then I would get a PanWorld or something. Also keep in mind that a lot of pump noise comes from the vibration of the pump hitting what it is sitting on... to fix this, you could put some foam (like a cheap camping mat) under the pump.
